Run the command line on RedHat, it seems not enough memory, but the command "free" told me there are over 17MB physical memory. Anyone ever meet this problem? how to resolve? Thanks. Boinc and the setiathome app. need 64mb free memory. swap does not count. The easiest way to get it working is to upgrade your memory to 128mb. ![]() Join BOINC United now! |

You need a minimum of 64 MB physical memory. Your system has only 60 MB physical memory. I recommend you to attach more memory into this system. |

Isn't that what i replied in the first place ? Do you read before posting ? (just curious) ![]() Join BOINC United now! |

Thanks to both. On another Linux gear executing BOINC, it reports that [root@office root]# ps axur USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 3619 99.7 8.1 18280 15604 ? RN 09:05 697:23 setiathome_4.02_i686-pc-linux-gnu root 4531 0.0 0.3 2624 672 pts/0 R 20:44 0:00 ps axur Only 18MB total, out of which 15MB physical, memory are actually needed. In General Preferences, I have already set both total and virtual memory allowance for BOINC to 90%. Is there any way the BOINC's check for computing environment be lowered? These low-memory gears worked fine in previous SETI. I really want to continue using them for BOINC. |

If you had looked at the timestamps you had seen, that your post was 70 seconds before mine. So we both posted in parallel. Do you wan't to provoke and offend me again ? - No problem, welcome back in my ingore list. |

Boinc reads out the installed physical memory (=the memory you have installed into the system). The output from the ps shows, that the setiathome binary needs 18 MB memory. The boinc client needs 5 to 7 MB memory, too. But the OS need also space in the memory - or example kernel, buffers and a lot of more. So 64 MB Memory are quite less, which could decrease the performance of your systems. So I recommend you to install more memory in your system. |

OK. Get your point. But these low-memory systems are pretty out-dated. They are now used only for BOINC, not for any other applications. Impact on performance is not an issue. Besides, hardware upgrade is not likely. So, my question is: Is there any way to either bypass BOINC's checking on the computer configuration; or set up a profile so that BOINC feels all right? Thanks again. |

But these low-memory systems are pretty out-dated. They are now used only for BOINC, not for any other applications. Impact on performance is not an issue. I think, with to less memory, your system will going to swap heavly. Which decreases performance. You need about 25 MB for the seti app, 10 MB for the boinc client, and the rest is quite less for the OS. It make no sense to let it run with to less memory. Berkeley had a lot of problems with system which had to less memory. This was the cause for the existing memory limits. Also, if the new enhanced seti app will be released the computing times will increase about 10 times. So it is the question, if your old systems will get the work finished within the deadlines. Some people had written, that the memory limits will decreased with the enhanced. In the moment the beta uses a lot of more memory. With the actual enhanced (beta) the seti app allocates memory dynamicly. My system with 1 GB Memory uses about 70 MB for the seti app. The other system with 128 MB uses about 30 MB for the seti app. |

All right, I have no choice, but to accept the fact. By the way, when will the new (enhanced) version of BOINC be released? |

By the way, when will the new (enhanced) version of BOINC be released? There is no date known in the moment. But it will come soon. The newest version is still in beta in the moment. There will be a transition time, in these time results from both will accepted, and after the transition time only the results from the enhanced will be accepted. The enhanced will do a lot of more science computing. The senity is 12 times higher than the old one. - It is a great step forward. |
