Having seen a lot of negative comments about Boinc, and I'm sure most are genuine, I thought I'd post some positive stuff.

I ran Setiathome Classic on XP until I moved to Linux, then setup Setiathome Classic running with Wine on FC2. This worked ok, but after completing a few data units would freeze up and refuse to return the completed data units. This meant deleting Setiathome, and reinstalling it, which would then run, and do a few more data units. The graphics were fins , and I think I prefer the old "Classic" graphics. They are static, and it's easy to read the information. On a different instance of FC2 I have installed the native Linux version of Boinc-Setiathome. It took a couple of goes. First time I ran the installer in the /home/user directory, and ended up with created files all over the place, and couldn't get it to run. Deleted all the files and anything else Seti. Then created a directory which I named "boinc-program". Put the installer in this directory, and ran it from there. Now I only have one file in /home/user, .BOINC Manager. I can deal with this. All in all, Boinc appears to be working ok, DL's new data units before the current one has finished, which saves a bit of time. I don't autostart it. I have buttons on the desktop to start and stop the client, and for the Boinc-Manager. If anyones unsure how to create the Boinc-Client STOP button, post back, and I'll provide details. The one thing I did notice is that I got some flickering on the screen, which then turned to coloured flickering. A hasty shutdown, and a cleanout of fans, cpu cooler, etc, seems to have fixed this. WARBING. Please clean out your machine of accumulated dust at least every 6 months. Dust accumulates pretty much in the same way as your brakes fade on your car (automobile) . You don't really notice the difference until you have new brake pads/shoes. Keep on looking for ET folks. Nigel.
