Bah hahahahahahahahaha....!!!!

If you're talking about their updates website.... Bah hahahahahahahahaha....!!!! Only Indecent Exposure can access it and.... Bah hahahahahahahahaha....!!!! I went ahead and gave.... Bah hahahahahahahahaha....!!!! Internet Explosion permission to use the Internet through my firewall. Well, it tried.... Bah hahahahahahahaha....!!!! tried loading the page and.... Bah hahahahahahahaha....!!!! gave me an error message that the page could not.... Bah hahahahahahahaha....!!!! be loaded.

Hopefully, Dan, you may have been talking about something other than their site? Please....? (-:< >:-)

i was at microsoft update this morning and got there with no problems...how?...simple logic!

You mean "Micro$oft" logic don't you? Using Internet Exploder? Tried and failed.... I believe it's because of the ongoing problem I have been having with having to reboot my XP box just to access the Internet. I don't dare reboot at this time. If, and that's a big IF, the download is indeed in progress, I'll screw that up and have to start all over again.

Hmmmm.... Just had a thought.... I'm going to try to access their site from my FreeBSD box using Firefox. (-:< >:-)

ADDENDUM: From Micro$oft:
Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Exploder 5 or later.

To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Exploder Downloads website.

if the icon is gone...you can safely move on...whenever one of the automatic updates comes my way...it will start back up where it left off if it's interrupted...in fact...i can shut everything off with the icon still showing and it's okay...but you may be behind on your updates to0 far to count on that.

Thanks Martin. Guess what? IT doesn't work. I really don't believe that Micro$oft is going to allow "alien" browsers to access their update site. Thanks for trying though.... >:-)

Oh, I rebooted XP and the download started over. In about 10 minutes it's almost to where it was after more than 16 hours of "progress" before. Just looked and after 16 minutes, it's at 34%.... (-:< >:-)

Well, this is a fine how-do-you-do! It's been 14 hours + and there's no indication of whether the updates have finished downloading or not. The updates icon has disappeared. I even shut down BOINC on the XP box in hopes that the download would go faster than molasses going uphill in January. Freakin' Micro$soft!!!! |-:< >:-|

This has happened to me before, and I'm not quite sure why. This was even when I tried clicking the update icon in the notification area repeatedly, and even restarting afterwards. It may be a problem with the Windows update server. Anyways, when all this happened, I ended the update process directly from the task manager and waited for the auto-notification to come through, and this time it did.

I also had a problem accessing the Windows update site as well. But I realized it was because I was blocking my OS info with my firewall and blocking Java and and AciteveX with my firewall and browser. When I changed all of that I was finally able to access the update site and get what I needed.

About the prob with the past MS update that you downloaded, if you know which update it was, maybe you can uninstall it and try installing it again. Or if you have an idea which update file may be causing this, just uninstall that instead of the whole update. But run Check Disk, and update any network software or drivers that support your internet connection after you do all of this.

[edit] Umm, I see you're getting the update now.

Downloads received and SP2 [>:-(] is installing as I type. As for the other update, I have done so many updates since, there's no way for me to remember or figure it out. Most of my Internet activity is done from this box, FreeBSD, anyway, so I can live with it. Besides, I have got this hankerin', again, to build a new box, which means the current XP box will become another or replacement FreeBSD box. I believe I am having a hardware issue with the FreeBSD box, same as when I had WinME on it. Maybe I'll just keep it for playing games or something.... (-:< >:-)

I could reply the very same thing to you. Meaning, out of your experience, you bring these problems of yours (specific to your machine) to a generalize issue.

I didn't say I was the beholder of truth? Did I? Anywhere in my post?

Was is it you can call you FreeBSD just that, and you can't call Microsoft and Windows by their names? I'd have to conclude it is out of simple hatred. Itself, in itself, its fine, it shows human emotions. But, when arguing with someone else, it shows that you are not opening your mind, closing it instead. This renders conversations very difficult to carry on.

You experience problems, I don't, many more users out there are also not experiencing these problems, they may not experience any, they may experience some which are unrelated to yours.

I don't have to remind you how painstaking a task it can be to program software for the multitude of different hardware out there. For some, one software installed may trigger downfalls in stability, for others, it will make a system even more stable.

I've just went to Windows Update, I just updated two sets of things, one being related to WMP and the other being Microsoft.Net 2.0. About a 30 meg d/l which I did in a few minutes (would have been much faster if my ISP wouldn't be having serious problems lately and thus limiting me to a 30 kbps max d/l speed when it's usually at around 180kbps). Can you explain this? Can you explain the fact that I can get these updates fast and not you? Can I say that, because I get them fast, everyone is able to get them fast? No, of course not.

Again, some people are bent on hating some things. This is often the same hate which goes on between Mac and PC users, a blind hate, no valide arguments on both sides. Just accepting that each machine gives what each clients wants and desires from them, that would put an end to this age old feud.

Actually I can explain it!! The automatic windows update process downloads updates when it sees the CPU Idle. Since Siran is running BOINC te update process never actually sees the CPU idle. Windows Updater then downloads the update in such a way as to not interfere with the running processes.

If you go to the Update page and tell Microsoft to down load the Updates you aren't using the Windows Updater in the same manner and it downlads the updates full speed.

The age old feud as you call it was started by Microsoft itself. They still claim that MS-Windows is superior to Unix. It is not..

[EDIT] I will add that this laptop would be running Unix if it wasn't for the software that controls my dive computer only runs on Windows..

Sir. I was giving you the benefit-of-the-doubt, hoping that if I explained my XP problem you might know of and have a fix for me. The problem with my Internet connection slow down and eventual stopage is my only major problem with XP. I do not HATE Windows, I dislike it. I use it because it is a necessary evil. I'm sorry I tried to get information from you on this.... |-:< >:-|

I do wish I could help you, but I would need to put my dirty hands on your computer to do so. I'm sure you ran many debuggings before. Problems like those can range from a simple DNS mishap to a full blown corruption due to just about anything. Sometime, you modify something, it goes unnoticed for many months, and then, you update the computer and vlam! I do remember that I couldn't access my "regedit" for many months, I couldn't care less since I was using other more powerful registry editors. But the problem really got to me one day, I just had to know why it was telling me that I didn't have the Administrator privileges to run the program when only I touches this computer. It finally dawn on me that, for some unknown reason, I had firewalled my regedit.

And just who started it and who said what? To me, Unix (or Linux) as always been a wee bit too complex for the common non-business market out there. But I will admit that Fedora4 was really nice. I just couldn't keep it because it wouldn't support my printer and cam and such, but it was still a very good OS which is slowly but surely coming of age.

I guess I will stop here though, I always prefer to stay true to the spirit of the thread and this wouldn't be in anyway, shape or form anywhere near concerning Firefox. The only point I was trying to make is that I respect all makers of OS's, they have worked hard to bring forth software that gives us what we are looking for, and on the same token, they give us new frustrations.

Bill Gates. In the 1980's he stated that Microsoft DOS will completely replace Unix in a short time. When Windows was introduced he stated the same thing.

I.E and Windows is without a doubt the worse sercuity hole on the internet.. I am sorry you don't see that. I have no respect for any one who forces you to use a particular web browser or software just because trhe are too lay to make it compatible with all browsers and OS's and that includes the manufacturer of my Dive Computer.
