Bah hahahahahahahahaha....!!!!It's an old saying that a good laugh prolongs life. So, you'll be at least 160 years! ;o) I think Siran is right about that IE is a bad browser. Let's review some hard facts: o There hasn't been a major upgrade for years. o Lacks many new features. o Numerous security problems and a patchwork of fixes. o Uses non-standard techniques to view web pages. o Is closely linked to Windows. In fact Windows cannot do without it. The last item is my main objection. This forces me to use IE in some circumstances (as Windows Update). About Windows Update: why can't Microsoft put this function into Windows itself, just as everyone else does with their programs, instead of depending on a web page? It'd be much easier and more user-friendly too. The 4th item is a nightmare also, because many so-called programmers are tempted to use these techniques and thereby making web pages incompatible with other browsers. What we need more of, is states and countries who forces Microsoft to follow standards - and preferably open standards. |

one of the best things that FIREFOX is...is that it's serious competition for INTERNET EXPLORER and MICROSOFT...i think that competition in this arena makes things better for all of us...before FIREFOX started making some noise...IE was on the back burner at MICROSOFT...now they're talking about releasing IE7 soon...a monopoly is bad news for all of us...now that MICROSOFT has decided to make major improvements...i am compelled to give IE7 a try when it is released...for now...i like FIREFOX best...that's why i use it...and i will continue to feel that way until there is something i like better. A Microsoft engineer told me a few months ago that they are copying Mozilla for their upgrades to IE. I agree that competition is good for us, the consumers. Choices are good and there is no way we are all going to like the same things. But pretending the competition is evil doesn't get us anywhere. A Microsoft engineer told me a few months ago that they are copying Mozilla for their upgrades to IE. I'd take this with a grain of salt. Those who are actually in a position to know anything at M$ are under strict NDA's. Anything else is hearsay. No, I'm not saying this person wasn't in fact an engineer at M$, simply that he/she most likely isn't on the browser project, or doesn't value his/her job much. (or the project has reached public beta stages) |

@Siran t' T'Khasi How did the updates go? I had to deal with windows update yesterday as well on a computer I was working on for a friend. Bigger drive, fresh win2k install and updates. The first time I did the sp4 install I used the express install and afterward was unable to use windows update. There was some kind of certificate error and every time I ran the update page I got a message about checking the computer's date. After failing to find a solution I decided fine, I'll try it a different way. Downloaded the full sp4 package. Re-format. Re-install win2k. Re-install sp4 (this time the network install package). Run the DSL service installer (incl. ie6 and a few other items). This time it went well. No problem with the automatic updates. No problem with the update site. I've used NT and derivates since NT4SP3 and most of the times I've had problems with service packs have been since ms started pushing people to use the express installer. I do however remember one problematic service pack for NT... Nothing travels faster than the speed of light with the possible exception of bad news, which obeys its own special laws. @Siran t' T'Khasi Kind of funny, I have both Win2K and XP on this machine. I did a setup on the Win2K which I don't really use, brought it up to date as far as security goes (actually found 4 nasties in there... trojans of course). I did install SP4 and also encountered problems (hell I couldn't boot in 2k anymore as it was stating my SYSTEM file was corrupted). Did a little tweaking, lost some data but was able to rebuild fast. Went on Windows Update, told me that there was an error whenever I would press either History, Custom or Express. Couldn't let this thing win, I google'd the error code, found out a simple solution. (got to paste the log) Created a file (called it anything.bat) with this inside. cd /d %SystemRoot%\\system32 regsvr32 comcat.dll /s regsvr32 shdoc401.dll /s regsvr32 shdoc401.dll /i /s regsvr32 asctrls.ocx /s regsvr32 oleaut32.dll /s regsvr32 shdocvw.dll /I /s regsvr32 shdocvw.dll /s regsvr32 browseui.dll /s regsvr32 browseui.dll /I /s regsvr32 msrating.dll /s regsvr32 mlang.dll /s regsvr32 hlink.dll /s regsvr32 mshtmled.dll /s regsvr32 urlmon.dll /s regsvr32 plugin.ocx /s regsvr32 sendmail.dll /s regsvr32 scrobj.dll /s regsvr32 mmefxe.ocx /s regsvr32 corpol.dll /s regsvr32 jscript.dll /s regsvr32 msxml.dll /s regsvr32 imgutil.dll /s regsvr32 thumbvw.dll /s regsvr32 cryptext.dll /s regsvr32 rsabase.dll /s regsvr32 inseng.dll /s regsvr32 iesetup.dll /i /s regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll /s regsvr32 actxprxy.dll /s regsvr32 dispex.dll /s regsvr32 occache.dll /s regsvr32 occache.dll /i /s regsvr32 iepeers.dll /s regsvr32 urlmon.dll /i /s regsvr32 cdfview.dll /s regsvr32 webcheck.dll /s regsvr32 mobsync.dll /s regsvr32 pngfilt.dll /s regsvr32 licmgr10.dll /s regsvr32 icmfilter.dll /s regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx /s regsvr32 inetcfg.dll /s regsvr32 tdc.ocx /s regsvr32 MSR2C.DLL /s regsvr32 msident.dll /s regsvr32 msieftp.dll /s regsvr32 xmsconf.ocx /s regsvr32 ils.dll /s regsvr32 msoeacct.dll /s regsvr32 inetcomm.dll /s regsvr32 msdxm.ocx /s regsvr32 dxmasf.dll /s regsvr32 l3codecx.ax /s regsvr32 acelpdec.ax /s regsvr32 mpg4ds32.ax /s regsvr32 voxmsdec.ax /s regsvr32 danim.dll /s regsvr32 Daxctle.ocx /s regsvr32 lmrt.dll /s regsvr32 datime.dll /s regsvr32 dxtrans.dll /s regsvr32 dxtmsft.dll /s regsvr32 WEBPOST.DLL /s regsvr32 WPWIZDLL.DLL /s regsvr32 POSTWPP.DLL /s regsvr32 CRSWPP.DLL /s regsvr32 FTPWPP.DLL /s regsvr32 FPWPP.DLL /s regsvr32 WUAPI.DLL /s regsvr32 WUAUENG.DLL /s regsvr32 ATL.DLL /s regsvr32 WUCLTUI.DLL /s regsvr32 WUPS.DLL /s regsvr32 WUWEB.DLL /s regsvr32 wshom.ocx /s regsvr32 wshext.dll /s regsvr32 vbscript.dll /s regsvr32 scrrun.dll mstinit.exe /setup /s regsvr32 msnsspc.dll /SspcCreateSspiReg /s regsvr32 msapsspc.dll /SspcCreateSspiReg /s exit ---- And voilà! For some reason, something unregistered these files, once registered again, I could use WU again and finished updating 2K. I know it's too late, since you did reinstall, but it was mostly to remind people that googeling an error code can go a long way into solving an issue sometime. |

One thing should be remembered here. It would be IE, it would be Netscape, it wouldn't matter. When greed comes to mind, who ever you are, whatever good intentions you have, making money comes first, at any cost. I could have very well seen Netscape become an empire as it wanted to do the exact same thing as Microsoft, put their browsers on OEM's, I even think they were working on a shell a while ago (I -think- I read that somewhere a few years ago). The bottom line is money. When it comes to getting it... for many, anything goes. And for those with "principals" those can... change over time. And yes, I will agree that an update to IE is long over due. I remember that, everytime they were working on a new version, I'd be scouring the net to find an illegal beta so I could install it, I would actually pirate free software! Just so it could eventually crash my machine :) Although, I wouldn't be one to gripe, for Alpha's are Alpha's and Beta's are... Back in... mmm... 1993-1994... there was Memphis (wasn't?), the very first beta of Win95 (called Win94) at the time. I had too, install that bugger on an old machine. I was in a University dorm, I'd leave the door wide open so that students passing by would see this shell on my screen. Had people stopping and telling... WOW... I had to take the bugger off of course, too heavy for that 486 machine which I think had about 16 megs of Ram. |

there was Memphis (wasn't?) If I remember correctly Memphis was the codename for Win98 Just as Longhorn was the codename for windows Vista. Many of the changes introduced in Win98 (such as the quicklaunch bar) were also available in Win95 with installation of IE4. This was the point when ms started to integrate IE into windows. In FF 1.5, when adding a search engine right after installing, there came a blank space. I remember Raven also had that problem. It's still there, so how do I remove that??? Is there any fix for this or should I reinstall FF??? Will this fix it, or will the blank space just remain there?? Anybody, any ideas??? You could try the searchpluginhacks extension and see if it allows you to delete the space. If that doesn't work, you can type about:config in your URL bar. Scroll down to the browser.search.order entries. See if there is a blank one. You might be able to change it's list order. Putting it at the bottom wouldn't be such a bad thing. I haven't tried changing the sort order though. I've simply made my default search engine something other than Google. You can also look in [system drive]\\Program Files\\Mozilla Firefox\\searchplugins. (unless this has changed with 1.5. I still haven't upgraded because some of my essential extensions aren't compatible yet) This is where the Mycroft plugins hang out. Is there an unnamed one in here? |

Thanks Raven and Heffed! No, I couldn't find the right files in the directory, but the plugin did the job! Thanks for the link! :-) "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

In 1.5, the directory you mention above contains only the search engines Firefox has as defaults. (Finding this directory was handy for me, to eliminate the Amazon, and Ebay searches.) The directory named in my post is where user-selected search engines appear. |
