Trust me -I understand why you don't just set your box (or boxes) to just "auto update" on demand. I arrived at work on a Monday once to a network that wasn't running thanks to MS once - never again! Had you done it manually, would that have prevented the network from failing? Cordially, Rush elrushbo2@theobviousgmail.com Remove the obvious... |

Mmmmm Firefox. The Aardvark extension is excellent. It removes unwanted elements from a page as you are viewing it (banner ads anyone?) This is the voice of world control. I bring you peace. It may be the peace of plenty and content or the peace of unburied dead. The choice is yours. |

The snag with Windows Update is IMO the strongest argument for those who critizises Microsoft for protectionism and unfair business. You can argue that MS have no duty to provide support for other browsers on their own site, but this goes beyond "just another site". It's a major site/page and most important for everyone who use Windows. MS is just trying to show that IE is part of the operating system. And if they were successful in buying Intuit, Quicken would be claimed to be part of the O.S. too. This is the voice of world control. I bring you peace. Wow, that Aardvark extension looks very powerful. It looks like it would be handy for build a web page and getting it the way you want. |

Would you expect them to do anything else? I mean, if I could intergate all my software needs into one large operating system, I certainly would. Well, this is a fine how-do-you-do! It's been 14 hours + and there's no indication of whether the updates have finished downloading or not. The updates icon has disappeared. I even shut down BOINC on the XP box in hopes that the download would go faster than molasses going uphill in January. Freakin' Micro$soft!!!! |-:< >:-| CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Man... some of you guys have some bones to pick with Microsoft (to put it mildly). I've been using Windows since version 3.0. I'v had gripes about the operating system but I have come to realize a long time ago that there is no "magical" operating system out there. I've used most of them, from Mac's to Linux and saw that they all have limitations, they are all crash prone (to some degree of variance) and all of them will not offer me -all- I want and desire from a OS. This said, why prejudge the OS? I've read things like "I'm scared of installing SP2", as if all major updates didn't carry dangers, -normal- instability (in the first few weeks before solutions are found, etc). I'm not a big fan of Microsoft (notice that I do use its proper name), I've seen many things that could be improved upon; this goes from software to how the company works nationally and across borders. But, throughout it all, I’ve done countless wonderful things with this OS. There’s a noted tendency on the net, the “faction warsâ€Â. These ranges from the age old Mac-vs.-PC wars, to the Linux vs. Windows, there use to even be on Corel Office vs. Microsoft Office war. And often, people on one side will rarely put forth these inherent limitations by a given software, it is far easier to bash on what you hate or dislike than to wage a balanced argument by comparing products. Often, people will also hide or, on the complete opposite side, they will be on the extreme range of the spectrum, fanatics of a given product. I prefer PC as I believe they offer me a better platform for expanding hardware/software. I prefer Windows as I think it offers me a better OS stability wise and plug in play wise (being able to use recent to old hardware). And… to stay true to this thread. I do use Firefox ;) Mmm.. almost forgot, I never have problems with Windows Update, I get my updates very fast and smoothly. |

Sure, why not? Would you expect them to do anything else? I mean, if I could intergate all my software needs into one large operating system, I certainly would. Yikes! And most people think reducing the footprint is a good thing... ;) Not to mention security holes. Ever wonder why IE is the most targeted browser for hackers? It's tied in so closely with the operating system. And unless people have painstakingly tweezed it out of their system, all windows users have it. I'd hate to see the hacking explosion if programs such as Quicken also became tied into the OS. And I believe you'll hear some arguments about the 'invaluable' software M$ has written. (And the jury is still out on 'written') I view M$ as a necessary evil. If there was an alternative that could easily run all my windows apps, I'd run it in a heartbeat. (Read, no windows emulators on Linux. That's not easy in my book) And back on topic, here are some of my favorite Firefox extensions. (in no particular order) Forecastfox - Current weather reports in my browser. ChromEdit - If you edit .js and .css files often, this is what you want. CustomizeGoogle - Although I ordinarily use Scroogle Scraper for my searching, If I need to use Google for anything (Gmail, etc...) it has some nice features, such as randomizing your login cookie and removing the ad links. DictionarySearch - Adds any online dictionary access conveniently at your fingertips. JumpLink - Kills redirect links. Allows you to open the desired web page directly. SpoofStick - A simple tool to help avoid phising/spoofing. TargetAlert - Shows me where links are taking me. In domain, off domain, if the link is to a .pdf or .mov file, or whatever. Roboform Toolbar - Secure password generator. Also remembers and stores passwords encrypted locally. Also auto-fills forms, but I don't use that. SpellBound - Spell Checker. ShowIP - Also helps to avoid spoofing/phishing, and qives easy access to various DNS tools. TabMixPlus - Expands the tabbed browsing capabilities. Linkification - Turns plain text links into clickable hyperlinks. AdBlock Plus - My favorite extension. Blocks all manner of undesirables. :) AdBlock Filterset.G Updater - Automatically updates from a regularly maintained list of ad filters. Can also integrate with self made filters. FlashGot - Easy integration with download managers. FoxClocks - Multiple timezone clock. Gmail Notifier - Tells me if I have any mail on my Gmail account. (although I actually access Gmail through POP) BBCodeXtra - Easy BBCode and HTML formatting. Searchbar Autosizer - Automatically expands the searchbar to the required size. Defaults to the smallest size possible. Tweak Network - Allows me to tweak FF's network settings. Similar to FasterFox. Anonymouser - Allows me to right click on a questionable link and be routed through anonymouse.org's anonymous proxies. Disable Targets For Downloads - Prevents downloads (generally binaries) from opening a blank window. IE Tab - Opens IE embedded in a FF tab. Context Search - Adds the Mycroft search engines (those available in the search window) to the 'web search' context menu. SearchPluginHacks - Allows easy removal of Mycroft search engines. Simply right click and select 'delete'. Who searches with Yahoo anyway? ;) Greasemonkey - A tool allowing scripts to be used that alter the content of a given web page. (you can basically personalize a web page to be easier for the way you like to work) Make Link - Easily make hyperlinks by right clicking on a web page. |

Tell me this, then, oh wise one.... >:-) Several months ago I did an update from Micro[$]oft for WinXP. There was some problem with TCP/IP [don't remember, off hand, what it was]. Before doing the update, things were running quite nicely, which is a lot of complement for Micro[$]oft and WinBlows. Ever since the update, I have had to reboot the PC, at least once a day, because I could not access the Internet through Firefox. To this very day I need to do this. BOINC doesn't seem to be affected by whatever problem was introduced with the update. It up/downloads no matter what. Got any ideas? I AM having a problem with my FreeBSD [Unix] box too. But, in it's case, I believe it is hardware. I had WinBlows on this same machine and that same problem existed then. Now, every time I go to do an update, I make damned sure I have a snapshot of my system so I can use the way-back machine in case my PC gets hosed by Micro[$]oft's "updates". Let's see now, it's been over 16 hours and still downloading, [I think]. I have no indication whether a download is in progress of not. No icon in the tray to check the percentage complete. Wooo Hooo! Gotta love Micro[$]oft.... NOT! Happy BOINCing.... (-:< >:-) [edit]for spelling[/edit] CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L.
