I use FF exclusively, unless I have to do the Whendoes Update, which requires IE. Which webcam did you cover? We can see the one with the old sock covering it, but there are others ;-) It's hard to distinguish a blush at times under infrared or Starscope...

Remember the black helicopters? ;-)

Why do you have to use Internet Explosion to do a Whineblows update? I don't. |-:<

I do a scan, every time I get home and the only webcam I have found is the one on my monitor. >;-)

We have a maroon and gold helicopter at work, an MD530, manufactured by McDonald Douglas. Does that count? Oh, one of our customers has a black Bell Ranger III. That one works, huh? (-:< >:-)

Hmmm, I've HAD to use IE to do that, but maybe I missed something.

Umm, Yes, you know about that cam, but the other ones? (Quit playing with your pointy ears) ;-)

I use automatic updates, but have it set to just notify me and not automatically download and install. (-:< >:-)

I avoid that, because it, to me, is another process that runs in the background that uses resources even though there may not be an update available. I can see it being useful when there is one available, but it if there isn't then it's useless to me.

It's much like all the background things that Logitech likes to install for a Webcam. Even though it's not in use there are programs still running in the background.....

I have to use IE for one particular site - if not for that, it'd be Firefox all the way.

You can use the IE Tab extension. It runs IE embedded on a tab within Firefox. Just right click on a page that requires IE and have it open with IE Tab. You can also select certain pages to always open with IE. I used to use IE View, but this is much better as I never have to leave Firefox.

For those that want Windows Update, there is an extension that adds Windows Update to the Firefox tools menu. When selecting it, it opens IE to the update page. WindowsUpdate

A word about Firefox extentions:

When new versions of Firefox are released, old extentions may stop working or malfunction. Firefox offers to upgrade extentions, but many times there are no updates/upgrades to an old extention. In these cases it's best to remove this extention from Firefox.

However, Firefox may refuse to start with a faulty extention in place. here is where the Safe Mode is useful. Simply start Firefox with parameter "safe-mode".

Example: "C:\\Program Files\\Mozilla Firefox\\firefox.exe" -safe-mode

After installing the extensions I normally do in firefox (v1.5 on a fresh SUSE 10.0 install) I have an "Override maxVersion compatability checking" checkbox in the install popup but I'm not sure which extension's installation it was a result of.

If a site demands that I use Indecent Exposure to view it, then I have no need to be on that site. I will NOT use Internet Explosion for any reason whatsoever.... (-:< >:-)

I couldn't agree more Siran - the trouble is the site I'm talking about is essentially my workplace - I have repeatedly told them Firefox compatibility is kind of important since it's the same site my customers pay for their orders. I'm only not mentioning the site in question out of respect for the unwritten "non-commercial" posting policy here which I heartily support.

I use Opera or Firefox as my everyday browser, but I have to use Internet Explorer to be able to use Windows Update. There are five reasons to this, but I don't want to go into details. If anyone knows of a way around this, while continuing to use Windows, please speak up! :o)

Yes, I know about that one. Heffed linked to it a few posts down. But I was looking for a solution to avoid IE all together. :o)

The snag with Windows Update is IMO the strongest argument for those who critizises Microsoft for protectionism and unfair business. You can argue that MS have no duty to provide support for other browsers on their own site, but this goes beyond "just another site". It's a major site/page and most important for everyone who use Windows.

Damned if I can find it, but I'm almost sure I did once stumble across a page that did the Windows Update thing in Firefox. The trouble with it (from my point of view) was that it was manually updated by hand by the guy who ran it and occaisionally the guys at MS do come up with an update you really ought to apply straight away rather than wait around.

Trust me -I understand why you don't just set your box (or boxes) to just "auto update" on demand. I arrived at work on a Monday once to a network that wasn't running thanks to MS once - never again!

Yes, and the Auto update function only gets the updates in the critical category. I usually want all the others too. Besides, Auto update is so slooooow that it takes hours to download a few megabytes. I think MS has set the priority on this program equal to SETI cruncher, so they fight for any vacant CPU cycles.

Oh Yeah, glacially slow! That's why I set mine to download before going to sleep. When I wake up, there they are, waiting for install. Which reminds me, there's a list of updates, so I need to go and pick and choose what I want. Hell, I may even do the SP2 thing this time around. Will have to do a snapshot of the system first, using the way-back machine, in case the box gets hosed by SP2, which I suspect will most likely happen.... (-:< >:-)

I might be in the minority - but SP2 didn't cause me any trouble

I remember back when SP1 came out. It created havoc all around. My brothers PC got hosed with SP2 and a guru friend of his used remote access to clean out all the crap. I'm leary of Micro$oft's updates, that's why I pick and choose and have skipped over SP2 since it came out. I created a restore point and am now downloading all the critical updates including SP2. (-:< >:-)

ADDENDUM: Speaking of being in the minority.... Back when WinME came out, I upgraded to it. I started hearing and reading of all these problems with it and how PCs were crashing left and right. I never had a single problem with it until a couple years later when I had to reinstall because my HD got hosed. Then I started having problems with it. (-:< >:-)

Oh, you'll still see me. I exclusively use Firefox on my FreeBSD box. I only do things on XP that I can't here, such as using Quicken. But, then again, maybe it'll take all my time to fix XP and give me no time to be here with my friends. Nah, that'll never happen.... (-:< >:-)

Keep in mind MS has written an invaluable program. When you do the same, and you see that other people are determined, in any way they can, to skrew your program and make damn sure you lose money, right out of your pocket, you tell me what you will do. Let them? Just give up? Or compete as best you can, to protect your livelihood?

Cordially,
