I have downloaded three different versions for Windows XP. Whenever BOINC Manager starts, I get the following error: "BOINC Manager is not currently connected to a BOINC client". When I try to "Select computer" from the dropdown, even "localhost" doesn't work. I never had a problem with the old SETI@Home application. I tried turning off all of my firewall protection, but still get the error. Subsequently, I can't connect to a project.

It's because the BOINC Daemon hasn't started up.

Please try the following first:
Close down your PC. Completely yes.
Wait a minute.
Then reboot.

If that doesn't work, tell how you installed BOINC? As what? A single, shared or service install?
