Is Your Office Haunted?

Maybe the spirits have decided that spooky mansions and creepy battlefields are passé. Maybe they want to cash in on the glamour of corporate life. Maybe they just wanted the sushi.

Silly String is canned in Hollywood

By Randal C. Archibold
NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE

October 31, 2005

LOS ANGELES - Silly String has been blacklisted in Hollywood.

For this, thanks goes largely to Tom LaBonge, a city councilman who sponsored an ordinance last year making it illegal to "possess, use, sell or distribute Silly String" - and the assorted knockoffs - in public areas in Hollywood from 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 31 to noon Nov. 1.

In the second year of the crackdown, red and white "Silly String Prohibited" signs have gone up along Hollywood Boulevard, spelling out the law and warning of a $1,000 fine for violators. Some passers-by have looked at them with confusion.

"I didn't know it was a problem," said Matt Heinlein, a tourist from Zurich, Switzerland.

But many others did. LaBonge, who sponsored the measure with another councilman, said he took action last year after complaints from city workers about the mess left on the street and from people who didn't appreciate pulling Silly String out of their hair.

Random sprayings provoked fights, the police said, sometimes with aerosol cans flying.

Only the makers of Silly String know its ingredients, but it's nontoxic and nonflammable.

The city ordinance was mainly intended to address the nuisance factor.

The Los Angeles police and Hollywood business owners have planned a news conference today to remind Halloween revelers, who by the thousands make Hollywood Boulevard a traditional gathering spot, to leave their Silly String at home, or else.

These are hard times for Silly String. Once, it was an innocent delight to fire a burst of the stringy goo at friend or foe, like a spider entrapping prey.

But it seems the fun is getting out of hand.

Across the country, from the Boston suburbs to Tacoma, Wash., the party favorite-menace has been banned, like beach balls have been, at graduation ceremonies, parades and festivals.

No one was arrested for illegal Silly String revelry last year, but Los Angeles police officers confiscated 500 cans of it.

Shop owners said the streets were cleaner and the crowds more peaceful.
