I think I know what the sound of one hand clapping is: I worked it out a few years ago, at the heighth of boredom, and somewhat feyly. All's one does is to hold one hand still, while clapping with the other hand. The Concise Oxford Dictionary (Tenth Edition) concurs with this definition of clapping, i.e.'to strike the palms of one's hands together, esp. for applause.'

Dennis, have you thought about getting a hobby perhaps? Painting or playing a musical instrument? Sudoko puzzles are quite good for passing the time. If you are interested in Zen you could find a meditation class or perhaps design and make your own Zen garden. When I'm bored I sometimes take myself out to see a movie or visit an art gallery.

I'm a published writer (wwwdotindependencejonesdotcom), so I have my many avenues of entertainment. I also work as a bookkeeper.

Dennis, I was just teasing you.

So you're Sidney's hippest writer? I shall have to try and get a copy of your book. It looks interesting.

Here is a zen poem for you to contemplate while you clap with one hand. (what a strange image that is. Your method still involves 2 hands though, so I count it as cheating)

Life on its way returns into a mist,
Its quickness is its quietness again:
Existence of this world of things and men
Renews their never needing to exist.

If you don't cheat ALL OF THE TIME, but only SOME of the time, then you're not really cheating, because one must have an entirety of the noun, verb, subject and/or objects for it/them to be reasonably considered reasonably real.

And anyway, it's an Effect-Cause open system of some importance to all mammals. It would have unique properties, one expects.

You can actually clap with one hand without involving the other hand at all... as demonstrated in an episode of The Simpsons :-)

Hold your dominant hand palm outward with the fingers together. Without moving your palm, bring all four fingers down to touch the heel of your hand. Move the grouped fingers back to a "straight" position and repeat the motion with increasing speed as you get used to it. Once over a certain (slow) speed, the collision of fingers against heel starts to make noise.
No animals were harmed in the making of the above post... much.

I applaud you with both hands, separately. And not just for being a published writer! You should advertise your work (or at least the link above) a bit more, let me know.

Sometimes I think we are alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we are not. In either case the idea is quite staggering.

Also, it's the one hand only that performs the striking against the other.
