G'day from Down Under I'm only a part-time WU cruncher and relatively recent recruit to SETI, but I have been driven nearly "BOINCers" ["bonkers" - English/Aussie slang for "mad"] by this catastrophic change of software. Â Though the message doesn't seem to be getting through to the aliens who have taken over the control room at SETI, I can only add my plaintive voice to the many who have complained about the folly that is BOINC on the bulletin boards. Â I used to enjoy the warm inner glow that the Classic screensaver gave me, ticking away my small but satisfying contribution to what I still think is a great project. Â Now some nerd on steroids has taken away even that small pleasure. So, like so many others, I am quietly folding my PC-tent and slipping away. Â Good luck, SETI - you'll need it, because when the call does finally arrive from deep space, I fear there'll be no-one home. |

I shut down 10 high-end machines last night and bid BOINCers G'day. When ET calls they will be home at UC-Berkeley, but they'll probably be too busy figuring out how to "gender norm" machines to notice. |

At this time you can still do SETI@Home Classic (I still have on computer full time there) and you can still participate in that project. The debute of BOINC is not quite as auspicious as we would like. But, there are teething problems and yes, that makes this less fun. But, there were lots of problems in Beta and they all got fixed. The load on the back end was unexpected and there is ongoing work to straighten that out. For my part, I just put 3 of my computers back to classic my ownself today. One was out of work on both projects and, well, it is a little bit of who cares right now. It is unfair to compare SETI@Home Classic to SETI@Home Powered by BOINC in that one is a finished and polished product with its teething problems well behind it (it is also not perfect in that it has had some recently uncovered vulnerabilities) where BOINC is in early days yet. |

I'm not normally one to send out flames, but this is ridiculous! The people at Berkeley (by their own choice) developed Seti@Home and provided us with updates for that software for years. They came to a point where they realized that the old way of doing "business" wasn't working and started development on the new BOINC platform. Again, they are doing this on their own time, by their own choice, as a service to the science community and those of us that like to setup a little program on our PC's that make us feel like we actually know a fraction of what the real scientists know and we have people like you out there complaining because this new software and/or the backend that supports it isn't working perfectly. I'd love to see you people come anywhere close to the quality of work that these folks have done with anywhere close to the uptime and reliability that they have. To the developers and support staff, Thank You! To the whiners, if you don't like it, leave the rest of us to enjoy it! |

Great! Another person who actually thinks and tries to understand what is going on. Thank you. And another note for you whiners, before you do go, send me your faster computers and I'll be happy to run BOINC on them. :) > I'm not normally one to send out flames, but this is ridiculous! > The people at Berkeley (by their own choice) developed Seti@Home and provided > us with updates for that software for years. I'm sorry to see folks quit. There have been others throughout history that gave up also but we don't know their names. We know the names of those who persisted. What if Pavlov had said "get those dogs out of here, their slobbering on the floor" what if Columbus said "lets turn back, I don't feel well" I for one am not going anywhere. I don't care if my credits go back to zero. I'll get WU's when I get WU's. "to not find is human, to not seek is foolish" . <A> |

I have the Classic and BOINC versions running on both my main computers (one at work and at home). I noticed that the Classic version has a slightly higher priority than the BOINC version, so I just check BOINC every so often and when I notice it's received some work units, I close Classic Down. I've done 2,324 Classic WUs. Wouldn't mind getting that up to an even 2,500. But, I just kinda combine the Classic and BOINC credits into one total in my mind. My home system has earned 29.41 or some such credits so far.. Woot! LOL. I won't be leaving the project. :) Mark H. |

Let them go without comment. They make it sound like taking their 'high end machines' will be catastropic to the Seti project. LOL! Considering the number of users and PC's running BOINC at the moment, I'm sure the boys at Berkeley welcome the relief! <a> |

Yep, CyberGoyle... Some people just have an over-inflated opinion of the relative importance of their contributions to the S@H effort. The Team I am on is a Top-10 (all teams) team in S@H-Classic. But as many work units as we have done there, our combined efforts are still just a drop in the bucket when compared to the TOTAL number of units processed by the project. If a few people want to 'take their high-end machines' and quit participating in the S@H project... Well... Let them go. The sheer number of other computers participating means that their 'sour grapes' will not be missed. In short, if one wishes to have an influence on the direction the project is going, threatening to leave is of no value whatsoever. If people are un-happy enough to leave, then they should just leave without comment. However, if people wish to effect change, a politely worded statement of what they think the problems are, and how they might consider fixing them just *might* work. No guarantees, but then life does not come with a guarantee... Myself, in spite of all the problems and difficulties that BOINC/S@H is currently suffering, I am going to stick around. I know that things *will* get better as time goes on. If BOINC/S@H has no work for me, there is always the other current BOINC project (predictor@home). If, like now, *they* are down as well, there is always (for now) S@H-Classic (or something else) that I can process while I am waiting. The problems that BOINC/S@H is currently suffering are not worth all the carping, whineing, moaning, and groaning that I have seen on this forum. People, just have a little more patience. All the whineing is doing is making the whiners look like the backside of a horse. It won't change what Berkeley does one little bit (except, maybe make them a tad on the angry side). The whiners should just gain a tad more maturity. The developers and staff of BOINC/S@H are doing the best job they are able to do under the circumstances. They have made a LOT of progress. Give them a break, will ya? Just my opinion. ------------ KWSN-MajorKong KWSN Forum Admin (retired) http://www.kwsnforum.com BOINC Beta tester ![]() |

@ KWSN - MajorKong We both said much the same thing, although you were far more diplomatic than me. After trying to be diplomatic, I now tend to go for the gut shot. Good luck. After awhile one tires of trying to educate imbeciles. Addendum: Watch out for the TROLL PATROL. Alpha Tester Account frozen... |

I think both views are equally valid. Complain or praise. Its just one persons point of view at one time. What I would say is that many people sem to be talking from a position of being in the know. They seem to have an inside line to Berkley and I suspect that a lot of this is nothing more than an opinion. If you want to praise the Seti team go ahead - theyare doing a great job on getting things working I would presume. Or they could be sitting around drinking coffee (I dont think they are) but my point is - we just dont know. Complainants - carry on - there are problems and theres no point defending the indefensible however we really dont know the route causes or what is being done. Berkley, developers and the Seti team - what would make me a lot happier is just more information. Please post more info. Most people whilst not being entirely happy with no units would at least feel more inclined to go along with things if their informed of the problems. Neil |

I left Seti Classic when BOINC went public on the 23rd. My 6000 some-odd classic WU's are history. If I die, just keep pressing "update" on the project pop-up. [url=http://www.setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/banners/5setibanner_bl.jpg] Processing for the Planetary Society since July 5, 1999 |
