This is a competition and the winner will receive a CD full of very rare and precious work units. Do you know what BOINC stands for?

I personally think

BOINC = Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Normal Chaos

What do you think?

No idea, but I think something from Batman would have sounded better - KERPOW or SPLAT perhaps. BOINC sounds a bit wimpish.

Bunch Of Idiot Nerds Complain

edit: I'll dedicate this post to Hydnum.Repandum, as he doesn't think Seti@home on Boinc has really done that much by completing 2.7 million results (check out the thread he made). This goes out to you, buddy. Sorry the program doesn't live up to your expectations.

Being an American, I do remember that in the 70's, Boinc (or Boink) was slang for sexual intercourse! ("so, did you boink her last night?")

Funny, but my parents used to term to indicate a accident or injury. "I leaned over and boinked my head on the wall"

There both were common usages in the upper midwest.

I remember the day I first heard the name of the project. I had quite a belly laugh!

Another true case - Honewell sold their computer business to Groupe Bull In France. (I worked with the part that was sold). Bull was a famous compter guy in France. The company was renamed Bull! (Honeywell Bull for a bit, but then just Bull)

I could even count the number of customers and contacts that then had the same joke "So what's new? You've been feeding us Bull for years!"

It seems the French folks in charge didn't understand the meaning of "Bull" in the US. (Bull is the very common shortend verson of the stuff that comes out of the back end of a cow within the US)("That's bulls..+!")

The French then started an ad campaign of "Know Bull" in the US. Even TV and radio ads with a very stange jingle!

After a couple years, the company just kind of faded out of the US marketplace.

Bull had been Boinked!

That's not even 3 days worth of what was done by seti classic. (notice they didn't include that number in the "news") IClassic's been pumping about 1m/day for quite some time...... In just about 30 days, Seti/Boinc did what classic did in 3! Yup... I'm impressed!

I was in the beta and I'll admit that there were times I actually completed few WU's - like when they had the debug code ramped up and a 4 hour WU might really take 20 and I didn't want to dedicate the machine for days, or when every WU I got would die within seconds - I'd just go back to Classic for a couple weeks....

Nobody in the beta seems to have "turned over the farm" to crunch.. The SW was just not that stable/reliable, even on 6/21/04!

BTW, there are about 25000 registed users on Seti/Boinc (as of this am US MST).
and 200000 active users on Classic (1 wu in the last 30 days)

Are you married/have a girlfriend, Woody? I ask, because I can't imagine you ever being happy with anything in your life unless it's perfect compared to something else. Such an attitude can't be too usefull in attracting the opposite sex.

You can't compare Seti classic and Seti/Boinc with regard to results because *so many more* people have run Seti classic. Of course more units were crunched per day on Seti classic - it had so many more times the active users than Seti/Boinc. 2.7 million results in this short period is excellent for such a new program, and is comendable in its own right.

Simply, you can't deride Seti/Boinc's acheivements just because they're different from Seti classic, for the above reason. A child taking his first steps is a great acheivement in it's own right. Well, not according to you. By your standards, since the kid is slower than an Olympic athlete running the 100 meter dash, so his acheivement is worthless.

Way to have stupid standards. If you don't like the project, leave.

edit: It's amazing how selective a memory these loudmouth complainers have. Even if something *doesn't* require complaining, they simply contract selective amnesia and shape the issue into something they *can* complain about.

edit2: I completely forgot that Seti classic sentthe same unit out over and over to keep the crunchers happy. Seti/Boinc isn't pandering to computer nerds wanting to increase their credit count this way. Here's a good synopsis:

"S@H-Classic kept up with demand for work units by issueing the same work unit to a LOT of people (5, maybe 10 or more). Not so with BOINC/S@H. BOINC/S@H will issue a work unit to only 3 people to start and will only issue it to more people if there are problems such as mismatches in verification or overdue (past the 2 week deadline) work units. As such, (at least until they can get more data sources such as Parkes) they WILL run out of work units for BOINC/S@H."
