Hi, I've set up my old PentiumII with 64mb RAM (+256swap), suse9.3 and boinc 4.43. When starting I get the messages: "[SETI@home] Message from server: Your computer has only 64000000 bytes of memory; workunit requires 3108864 more bytes." I have no free slots for additional ram. Is there any work-around to use this computer for seti@home with 64mb? Thanks |

So far I know are 64 MB the minimum ammount of memory, and there is no method to get it run with 64 MB memory. On my HPUX system seti needs 21 MB of memory, and boinc 6 MB. So 64 MB are realy less memory. What is about to replace the memory sticks against memory modules with more capacity ? - There are a lot of sources to get very cheap memory. |

If you dont want to upgrade your memory you could modify the source code downgrading the needed mem size and compile boinc yourself. But be aware it might result in performance loss. regards Crunch3r ![]() Join BOINC United now! |

I just installed Boinc/Seti on an HP-UX 11.11 system with 20GB RAM and when I try to run boinc_client I get the message that says I only have 64000000 bytes of memory. Anyone have any ideas what I missed (or misconfigured) during installation? |

It is a problem in the memory detection. Do you use my binaries, or do you have compiled it your self ? - If you use my binaries, which release do you use ? If you wish, I can make you a quick fix. |

Actually I'm using binaries from Stefan Urbat (HPUX 11.11 64-bit v1.6). If you'd like to point me to your binaries I'd be more than happy to install and run them. |

Stefan and I do teamwork, but this are mine binaries. If you write me a email (seti_boinc at dotsch.de), I can mail you a fixed binary. |

Mail with the fixed binaries are out.... Hello, can you mail me those binaries ? I have a 166mmx box with 64Mo RAM and another one with 96Mo RAM and the latter is completing a unit in less than 4 days, so I would like to be able to run seti@home on the first one too. (actually using boinc-4.72 and seti-4.18) |

Mail with the fixed binaries are out.... John had a problem with the memory detection of the HPUX client. The unfixed HPUX client can't detect memory above 4GB of memory. But I think it don't make sense to use seti with 64 MB of Memory. Seti and boinc both need up to the half of your memory. The OS need memory to. So it could be that your low memory heavly slowdown the seti app. It is better to upgrade your memory. But on the machine with 96 MB of memory should it run. |

2 years ago, I only had a K6-233 with 64Mo of RAM. This box was my desktop (hey I'm a student :)) and I was running seti without any problems. Now this 166 with 64Mo is just a server with low load (0.05 max) in a dark place so I though it can contribute to a project like seti@home (plus EDO RAM isn't easy to find nor cheap). |

Look at Ebay or a second hand computer shop, there you will get 64 or 128 MB EDO RAM for 1 or 2 Euros. The memory requirements are now higher, and if you have to low memory, your system will swap heavly, which decrease performance of the seti app drasticly. So it did't not make any sense, to let it run with too low memory. |

I decided to hack the sources myself making the server believe it has more RAM than it really has. The computer with 64Mo of RAM has now been running for at least 90 days on the project and whereas it is not as fast as the computer with 96Mo of RAM, it gives the result within a 4 day limit which I find acceptable. See results here : http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=2079148 (hacked source) http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=539152 (regular source) |
