There are a couple of possible reasons.

2005-09-05 14:16:54|SETI@home|No work from project
2005-09-05 14:16:55|SETI@home|Deferring communication with project for 10 minutes and 4 seconds
2005-09-05 14:19:41||request_reschedule_cpus: project op
2005-09-05 14:19:41|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi
2005-09-05 14:19:41|SETI@home|Requesting 8640 seconds of work, returning 0 results
2005-09-05 14:19:42|SETI@home|Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi succeeded
2005-09-05 14:19:42|SETI@home|Message from server: Not sending work - last RPC too recent: 168 sec
2005-09-05 14:19:42|SETI@home|No work from project

The first try (in blue), no specific reason is shown, and you didn't give the prior messages for any clues there. But when I looked at the Server Status page, there were only 69 results listed as Ready to Send. That number is always a snapshot, not exact to the second, and there may just have been no work available to send.
The second try (in red) is because there's a built in mechanism to keep from pounding the server on retries: it sets a required wait period before you can ask again, and it asked a little too soon. The deferral two lines later would get you past that waiting time. And I presume that it worked, because your computer shows having downloaded a result shortly after you posted your question! But I'm answering it anyway, for anybody else who comes browsing with the same problem. 8-)
