I'm reinstalling all computers here. Its now Windows 98SE, and it will be Windows XP *and* Mandrake Linux. Since the BOINC folder will be on a separate FAT32 partition, and Linux can read/write there, I was wondering if its okay to share that BOINC folder for both operating systems. I would like to, since there is no telling what OS will run for how long. And if XP runs a month, then Linux for another month etc, workunits may time-out.

There should be no problem in "sharing" a folder on a FAT32 partition between XP and Linux; you can (probably) use it under XP, and you can mount FAT32 partitions under Linux.

But to start crunching a WU under Linux, and continuing crunching it under XP... I don't know... You could try, there exists a test-WU with a known result, that you could test up against.

It is not posible to share the boinc between windows and linux, because in the xml Files are the binary names, some checksums and some other configs included.
This is diffrent betwwen linux and windows.

But sharing between windows 98 and XP could be worth a try.

Thanks for your answer. I will run BOINC from two separate folders so. One for Windows XP and one for Mandrake Linux. I just hope that my WUs won't time-out too often because of it. :/

I dual-boot between Windo$eXP and Slackware and don't have problems with WU's timing out. Just use the 'No New Work' button in BOINC Manager, or BOINC control program of your choice and try to run your WU cache dry before switching OS's.

PS: Don't even think about sharing CPDN files between Windo$e and Linux, they have a different format or something. Also with the long deadline you dont have to worry about completing a unit before switching OS's. Just a warning - only run CPDN under 1 OS or you will spend all your time crunching CPDN WUs.

PPS: I'm not sure the latest 4.45 BOINC client runs under Win 98 - you might have to use 4.19. It works perfectly, just missing some newer features and some projects dont accept it any more.
