Look at the server status page. See that Ready to send on the right? That is an approximation of the amounts of units ready to send out. At the time I write this it is 10.

Seti is not able to keep up with the demand of units asked. Mostly because of 400,000 computers asking for a 5 to 10 day queue. It's just not able to do so.

So for now you need to have patience.

Are you sure you only want your computer to work on Seti when it is idle? And quit doing so when you work with your computer?

Want more and longer running Seti work? Try Seti Beta as a backup project.

I have been doing this for a long time and devoted many processing hours for years to be part of a program I beleive is one of the most important on this planet.
What is going on with the server? Whay do I get a message that says "-last RPC too recent"?
Well, I can't beleive that I just got work sent to me after 8 hours of trying. 2036 hours Central, I just got work.

If you have read the news on the seti homepage or read the technical news links you would know that we have had a very severe problem, starting with a power outage then while the power was out they decided to go ahead with some upgrades to the system. When the computers were finally brought back online there were three disk drives that had failed and had to be replaced and a network connection that was acting up. After all the hard work to get the system back online they have been trying to get caught up. There have been literally tens of thousands of users trying to download work units at the same time and our splitters just cannot create work units that fast. Be patient with us and you will have your fair share of work units. It's just our systems are having a hard time supplying the demand that the unexpectedly long outage created. Our splitter is creating work units at the rate of 16.46 wu's per second so that means that we can only supply maybe one of those users every second, so with the number of users we have that are out of work units, you can see how long it will take to get all of them "fed".

Also the message you are getting says that you are trying to download new work too quickly. There is a certain minimum of time (sorry but I've forgotten what it was, 10 to 30 minutes maybe?) and you are trying before that time is up. This is the reason boinc itself will back off for a certain amount of time before trying again. So if you try to update every few minutes to try and get more work this is the reason you are getting these messages. Best thing to do is just let boinc work on it's own. You will get work as quickly as anybody else. Updating every couple of minutes won't get it any faster.
It will take time to recover from this so just be patient.

Thanks Jim,
I have been checking server status and the status of the on going projects in the server closet. I was aware that there were technical problems resulting from the lightning strike and the resulting power falure. I was under the impression that the problems had been resolved and status quo was restored. I stand corrected and will be more patient in the future.
Thanks,
Jack

The problems have been fixed (for the time being—some of the servers are held together with baling twine, so to speak) but after any outage of more than a couple of hours the loads get very heavy. In this recent case the part of the system that took longest to bring back up was where all the work is generated, so the supply of WUs is still failing to meet the demand.

I've been crunching a 160-hour WU from the beta project all week, in addition to E@h and SDG, so I was never short of work!

Hi Jack,
I sincerely apologize if I sounded irritated in my first reply. I didn't realize it until I read it again just now. However I had been in here for several hours yesterday answering the same thing over and over and over again. Some were even acting like they were intentionally denied work if they had found others had gotten a few wu's and they still had none. But it was just a gamble. Boinc would roll the dice by asking for more work. If the server had a few wu's to give at that instant you got a wu or two. If there were no more to give out you waited your turn and rolled them again! Usually the system can cope with a short outage, even a whole day wiithout too much problem. But this one was not an "ordinary" outage. If you look on the server status page on the top right hand column you can see "Results ready to send". This figure has been either zero or only a handfull of results since the first day of the problems. It's average is around 20,000 with peaks of over 50,000, so when you get down to where you can count them on your fingers and toes, you've *really* got problems. Even if there were no users at all it would take a good days work to get back to "normal" and then when you get thousands of users banging at the server's doors gobbling up every unit you can produce, then it is going to take a while to get back to "normal".
I really appreciate your patience and sincerely hope you and everyone else start getting more work soon.
I am like you in that I believe that this project is capable of answering one question that has been asked at one time or another by just about anyone that has looked up at the stars at night since we realized that they were suns just like ours. With all those bright shining stars up there, are we alone in this universe?

You mean Scylla and Charybdis? I don't usually comment on spelling, but that was a puzzler! Fortunately I have relevant experience. ;)
