Hi,

has anyone been successful in running boinc and astro/boinc-setiathome on FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE?

I'm at a complete loss with it for some days now.

If there is no error-msg "Deferring for 23 hours..." from the boincmgr while trying to attach to my existing SETI-project, then I get no message at all and my /var/db/boinc/projects gets cleared: the link to /usr/local/lib/boinc/setiathome vanishes.

Any help or hints much appreciated,

regards, Uwe

PS: my /etc/hosts is correct, my machine has 256MB

If you install boinc-setiathome from ports (/usr/ports/astro/boinc-setiathome) it installs all the data in /var/db/boinc.

It also installs a little file "app_info.xml" and the setiathome boinc client software within the projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/ directory within there.

This app_info.xml file tells boinc about the setiathome client software which is already now installed on your system, so boinc no longer needs to request the software from the seti servers.

Ensure that these files all exist. If not, deinstall boinc and the seti client and reinstall from ports.

Then just run
# boinc -attach_project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/
as root and it _should_ work.

I have the same problem :(
in ~boinc/sched_reply_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml
found error message: platform 'i386-portbld-freebsd5.4' not found

Same here. I have installed from ports and also built manually. I always get the same "platform 'i386-portbld-freebsd5.4' not found" error. On another note if I try to use the boinc command (boinc -attach_project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/) to bind to my setiathome project I get a seg fault.

You must create a app_info.xml, too : http://boinc.berkeley.edu/anonymous_platform.php

Actually there is one created by ports, but it was missing the <executible/> tag. Heh after all the trial and error it ended up being the stupidest thing ;)

Which boinc version do you use ?
Do you use Proxies ? - There is a problem on the older boinc versions (4.19), which produces sometimes a SIGSEGV, if the proxy is not avaliable.

My boinc version is 4.68, I do not using any proxies, just behind firewall.

A other user has the same problem like you (thread http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=21890).

Can you please post the last 100 lines of the output from "truss ./boinc_client". - I am not shure, truss can also be called strace, ktruss or tusc, too.

Btw. is there no (running and tested) binary version available for download ?

Some user has written, that it was successfull, if they wait the 23 hours..

But you can try to stop the boinc client, copy (for backup only) the file client_state.xml to /tmp, and change the field min_rpc_time to "<min_rpc_time>1130039168.558268</min_rpc_time>" in the file client_state.xml.

I got it to work on BSD 5.4. I installed the linux version 5.2.13. The only problem I run into now is that the memory it reports is negative:

12/4/2005 1:28:00 AM||Memory: -4096 bytes physical, 0 bytes virtual

The drive is not even full:

rizzibsd# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on

Any ideas?

Why don't you use /usr/ports/net/boinc-client and /usr/ports/astro/boinc-setiathome?

Hi Tsuji,

You should take a look at your bsd machine.
Something is wrong with you client. It's screwing all WU up either with an "result overflow" or computing error.

I'm overclocking the machine, so it gets error until I find stable-overclock setting.
I must keep testing.

Then you shoud test it against the reference wu and NOT running the client live.
That's not very nice what you do there...

Try stopping setiathome classic with

/usr/local/etc/rc.d/setiathome.sh stop

before attaching. Don't know why it works but I suspect boinc-setiathome and setiathome do not like working side by side.

Have you attached with "boinc_client -attach_project http://seatiathome.berkeley.edu $ACCOUNT_KEY" ? - $ACCOUNT_KEY is the key you get from seti@home per email.
Is good described in this thread : http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=21890

Which boinc_version do you use ?

Have you tried the soulution which Zarathustra has posted in this thread ? :
