Hi,

can anyone give me optimal preferences for running BOINC with the SETI@home project attached ? Currently my computer and graphical interfaces slowing down almost to a complete halt afte BOINC is running for several hours. Only a restart of my scomputer will bring back normal performance.

Maybe some of my preferences are set wrong.

Here is my system configuration :

Intel P4 2.6 GHz
2 GIG RAM
100 GIG HDD ( 30 GIG Free )
NVIDIA FX Go5600 ( 64MB Graphic RAM )

I just want to run BOINC the same way I run my old SETI Classic.

Thank you,

Tom

Tom, Seti gives you the possibility to define those settings just because there is no 'best' setting...

It depends on your machine, on its up time, on your connection, on your personal preferences etc. etc.
There is a default setting, which I would leave at the beginning. You will then see after a while if you want to change anything.

If - e.g. - you run 24/7, have a dial up, and connect not every day, then it would make sense to set 'Connect to network about every' to two or three, so that your computer loads enough WUs to always have something to do.
If you ar on cable (and there are no outages on the server side) then you may want to leave the default setting of 0.1.

In your case of the slowing down computer I'd try without using the screensaver functions at all. This often helps. And your computer even has more cycles to give to crunching.

Hi,

thanks for answering !

yup, turning off the screen saver did the job. It's running fine now. Will the screen saver in Boinc 4.45 be fixed in the future to be more compatible or without problems ???

I also read somewhere that there is a Boinc 4.7x available. Where can I download it ?

Thanks again for you help.

Cheers,

Tom

I'm absolutely no guru in screensaver-things, as I never use one...
But I have read in another answer that there are some issues of V 4.45 with ATI cards and with 3D screensavers.

The new client is in development. One can download it here. But always remember: It's a test version and may have its bugs...

Hi Graybeard,

thanks for the answer, but it seems, that the Screensaver also has troubles with NVIDIA graphic cards.

When I just select the "normal" ( not 3-D ) screensaver in XP and run Boinc 4.45, everything is fine. But if I run Boinc and select the Boinc screensaver, at first, everything seems to be fine too, but after a certain period of time ( the longer the screensaver is running ) the system becomes more and more unresponsive.

I just hope this gets fixed in the future. Not that I desperately need to run a screensaver, but sometimes it's nice to look at the Seti screensaver.

PS: Thanks for the link.

Cheers,

Tom

OK, so what should we do if there ARE going to be planned outages on the server side? My systems seem to only download two workunits. So when the server is down (like today) I rapidly run out of work. What can I do to increase the number of workunits downloaded. I used to run classic with seti-driver and I would juggle 40 WU per computer. If I increase the time between network accesses (currently 0.1 days) I am afraid that I would simply get bigger work units, not more of them.
