The San Diego Supercomputer Center will receive $14 million to advance an Internet-based project aimed at speeding up research in science and engineering.

The five-year grant is part of a $150 million funding effort by the National Science Foundation. The project, called TeraGrid, links state-of-the-art computers, high-performance network connections, huge databases and research labs nationwide.

The network already allows scientists to simulate the human cardiovascular system and estimate the consequences of earthquakes, among other complex computing jobs.

"TeraGrid unites the science and engineering community so that larger, more complex scientific questions can be answered," said Arden Bement Jr., director of the foundation.

The Supercomputer Center is at the University of California San Diego. Other grant recipients include the University of Chicago, Indiana University, the National Center for Computing Applications, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Purdue University.

Google stays true to form with quirky, minimalist new IM

By Ike Langberg
SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS

September 5, 2005

Google Talk instant-messaging and voice-chat software is very much like every other product rolled out by those masters of Internet search in Mountain View: elegantly minimalist and a little quirky.

There are none of the bells and whistles found in the Big Three of instant messaging: America Online's hugely popular Instant Messenger, also known as AIM; Microsoft's MSN Messenger; and Yahoo! Messenger. Google Talk is not compatible with those popular IM programs.

Google Talk offers no scrolling stock tickers, flashing ad banners, pop-up news pages or animated buddy icons. Indeed, it's so slimmed down that many users might find little reason to switch.

In another important step, Google has opened its free Gmail e-mail service to the public – sort of. To get the service, launched in March 2004 by invitation only, anyone in the United States can now open a Gmail account by taking the awkward step of asking for a short text message with a code number to be sent to a cell phone.

That's important because you need a Gmail account to use Google Talk. If you have a Gmail account, Google Talk will work on any computer running Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

To get started, go to www.google.com/talk and download the software.

....

I can't believe this! Just as I clicked to reply to this, you go and change from a link to posting the text instead.

Anyway, I like Google-Talk. Why would anybody want news, and popups and all the other garbage that goes along with the "BIG 3"? I'm sticking with GTalk.... >:-) (-:<

Who said anything about being confused? I didn't and wasn't. I knew exactly what was happening. It's just weird to see such changes in real time like that.... >:-) (-:<
