if i start the program in a terminal window the only thing i can see that looks like an error message is

Remote control not allowed ; using loopback address

Dont worry i have resolved this problem.

it was a permissions problem with the folders this also cleared the next problem up of why i was getting computational errors.

did you attach to the project?

./boinc -attach_project

or use boincmgr
