Just took another tour of Break the Forum!
Wow! Astounding progress in the blink of an eye.
Another distributed aspect of this distributed community at it’s finest.
Well done.

I just can't get into the breaking mood. It's no fun when you're supposed to break the forum.

Okay, everybody except for Misfit is supposed to break the forum. Misfit, you're not allowed to even think about breaking it.

Just as I was about to go into war mode I heard this little voice whisper, "reverse psychology."

It's because of the way quotes get quoted. No quote character and the quote is indented. Takes some gettin' used to.

That, and several other issues, should be solved at least in Boinc CVS on Monday and hopefully make it out to SETI@Home soon after that.

...if everything goes according to schedule.

Hey what's up CR? Yeah, just get rid of the blockquote and /blockquote tags and do yer own quotin'. I believe that the ultimate indicator would be to make the quoted text a different color.

Well Rob, I now made a mess of them. ;)
A maximum lenght of characters for the nickname and thread title wouldn't go amiss, as you can see.

still, using blockqoute tags can make things pretty messy... There's no need to quote anything but the parts of the message you are answering, but with more and more embedded blockquotes it gets pretty ugly to edit, even for someone used to html like myself. The effect of which would be more and more quoting of something un-addressed in the answers.

The old way to quote was much easier to handle especially for those unfamiliar with html. I just hope I can come up with a good solution (now that I've been critical of the blockquote approach, though I believe it's in a constructive way ;)).

&nbsp;&nbsp;* Not a whole lot, been busy with the rugrats.
&nbsp;&nbsp;* Different color would make it easy to read, good idea Rick :)

[Sorry for the extra quote, but I'm experimenting.]

No rugrats here. Did run out to gas up the truck and pay some bills.

Thanks, I do come up with a good idea about once a decade. >:-)

Now THAT is one nice looking post [#108611]. What do you think?

Nice, but difficult to implement. Really... hold off until the patches I've written are applied before further judgement. :-)

After the blue bar is here and other issues are fixed, let me know what you still think. If you still don't like it, we can investigate alternatives.

The old way also had some real issues, like wrapping quoted material like this:

> > Original text line that is really really long but not quite so long
> as to
> > make it all the way to china
>
> Yeah, I totally agree. But you're wrong. I hate you all.

...I regularly saw that, where quoted-twice text was wrapped funkily.

Also, it messed up *a lot* when images or hyperlinks were quoted... it didn't wrap rendered text, it wrapped *un rendered* text, counting the HTML tags as regular displayed characters.

Other forum software quotes similarly - you encase things in [quote] tags usually, instead of <blockquote> tags, but the same issue with telling how deep you are exists.

It's a tough cookie to crumble... but I think we're better off than we were before... especially once the rest of my changes make it over here.

Rob, how about allowing us within our forum settings to choose our own color?
