Sounds like it was a nasty couple of days at Berkeley! And we are back with only 30 minutes of data missing. Not bad at all. I propose a bonus for the entire seti team! A member of The Knights Who Say NI! For rankings, history graphs and more, check out: My BOINC stats site |

Very good work on the recovery. I'm sure it's been a really frustrating time for you folks and the crap you are about to get from the uninformed is not deserved in any way. That was a classic textbook "Murphys Law" recovery scenario, and you should all be proud of your efforts and accomplishment in getting things back up and running. I just started using Boinc, and I like it OK so far. I started splitting time with ClimatePrediction during the outage, so all was not lost. ;) GREAT JOB SETI TEAM! And I hope you don't have the opportunity to go above and beyond like this in the near future. ;) |

Good job on the recovery and minimizing the data loss. Thanks for the loan of the personal UPS hardware to avoid tempting fate any further! |

Two more cents here -- Congratulations S@H team on getting through a miserable series of Murphy's-law events. Thank you for working so hard to get everything back up with so little loss. Hopefully you've had your quota of Murphy for a while! btw -- nice choice on the name of the newest machine (on the status page)! |

Thanks, folks! I feel for you. My LAN is fairly modest in comparision and I know how it feels when things go wrong. I appreciate all you have done so far to keep us on track. Good Luck in the future. |

Whilst I am full of admiration for the Berkeley team and what they have managed to achieve, I am deeply depressed that they cannot afford to employ someone who actually knows what they are doing. None of this should have happened in the first place. Maybe a few more people should actually click that link to donate hard cash to the project. I will be doing so once I have an income again. </IMG> Be lucky Neil |

I am reminded of a contest that was run by the folks behind the "Dilbert" cartoon strip. They were looking for the most "pointy-haired-boss-like" comments that people had actually heard from their managers. One manager at a large software company in Washington State told his people that he wanted a complete list of every possible unforseen circumstance. One never knows how their disaster plan will work until they have to execute it. I had to do that recently, and I learned alot. Mostly, it went extremely well. ... and I will not criticize Berkeley for what seems like a very good outcome. |

Forgive me if this sounds harsh, but either you neglected to read the technical news, or you're just an idiot. To summarize, things were working PERFECTLY until they had a power outage for an UNKNOWN reason. The data server was not protected by a UPS unit because it had not yet been transferred into the server closet. I fail to see how Berkely should be criticized for an event that was beyond their control. I also fail to see how they should be blamed for not being able to see into the future and accelerate their plans to reorganize the server closet. The fact that they got everything up and running with only 30 MINUTES of data loss should be proof enough that they indeed know what they're doing. Quit being a prick and blaming the victims (Berkeley) and instead blame the culprit (Murphy). You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

Let me guess that the reason that it was still in the lab after five days is because moving it means downtime, and we all know what happens here when something at Berkeley goes down for a minute -- a vocal minority starts lambasting them for being incompetent. |

> ... and I will not criticize Berkeley for what seems like a very good > outcome. It's a marvellous outcome. Please read my post again. There was no criticism of Berkeley whatsoever - in fact quite the opposite. The guys at Berkekey are scientists. Some of the very best. They are not IT experts. Anyone employed in IT management will know that what happened shouldn't have. In this day and age, the hardware and software is readily and cheaply available to prevent such difficulties. If Berkeley had the money, they could employ an experienced IT manager to avoid this sort of situation. The fact is they don't have the money. So isn't it about time people really started supporting Berkeley and making tangible donations? Words are cheap. Anyone can say they support Berkeley but that doesn't solve any of their problems. Be lucky Neil |

> > Oh, wow, I missed the part about being in the lab and not yet in the rack. > Yep. They were already planning to move it there, but will have to set up infrastructure first. They took a small risk by running the data server in the lab meanwhile. If you try to be 100% failsafe, you won't get anywhere, or maybe into the looney bin :o) Regards Hans |
