I need a bigger desk or workstation to put my computers on. I have 3 and it could grow. What do you guys have? Maybe it could help me decide what I need. |

I've seen pictures of oneof our team members that has a farm (Shady) - he uses plywood or some such thing to put the motherboards on. Ah.. found the url.. try this http://shadyshack.dyndns.org/farm/farm.html Cheers, Chris. PS - Yes I've forgotten how to use HTML tags for the url.. <img border="0" src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/one/stats.php?userID=268&prj=1&trans=off" /><img border="0" src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/one/stats.php?userID=268&prj=4&trans=off" /> |

I use a small program Radmin that lets me log on to each one from another computer, so each computer does not need a monitor, keyboard or mouse. I currently have 17 here at the house and you do get to learn all about networking in the process! Most of mine crunch Boinc/Seti, the rest still crunch Classic Seti. My metal shelving is the heavy duty stuff they thru out at work years ago. I have several computers per shelf and have 9 computers on 3 shelves. The bottom shelf has 3 computers, the middle shelf has 2 computers and space for a keyboard and mouse. The top shelf ahs 4 computers. Their are actually 4 shelves total with the next to the top shelf being for 2 monitors. The second shelf up also holds the Acess Point and hub to let those 9 plus 1 other connect to the network. The one other is a floor sytle server. I did have to add a new circuit in the breaker box just for the computers, they kept popping circuits wheneve the vacuum cleaner was plugged in. I have a laptop on the center floor of the house and 5 computers on the top floor of the house. Th eones on the top floor each ahve their own computer desk. I do have several that are not running at the moment but that may change soon. They are currently being stored in the basement. My slowest is the server running at 300mhz and if I could get enough money out of it, it would be gone in a heartbeat to make room for a faster computer. It takes around 19 hours to do 1 Classic unit. It is a dual cpu model so it is doing 2 at once. My next slowest is a 1ghz Intel. I recently replaced a 700mhz machine and an 800mhz machine with 2 AMD 2900+ machines. I build my own machines so it is not a problem to buy parts and replace just what is needed. WELCOME to the world of "farming"! Ain't it great!!!! |

I'm not farming yet myself, but I did build another PC just a couple of months ago.. very cheap, just a box, cpu, cheap motherboard and a sempron 2400. I used some extra memory and a hard disk I had from my main PC, and an old graphics card. I don't have a monitor, keyboard or mouse. I use a program called VNC to "talk" to the second PC. Oh.. I also have it connected to my TV, so it's very nice to use when I want to watch a video that I downloaded off the net. When I have some more money I'm hoping to get a TV card, then I can use it as a sort of video recorder as well :) <img border="0" src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/one/stats.php?userID=268&prj=1&trans=off" /><img border="0" src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/one/stats.php?userID=268&prj=4&trans=off" /> |

I suppose if someone was good with metal you could just rackmount the boards and ditch the cases. Use a central cooling system then network so you only need a single monitor ,mouse and keyboard.Might save on space. |

Look for KVMs (Keyboard, Video, and Mouse) so that you don't need more periphery, and I'd highly recommend turning your current boxes into rackable ones. Are the mobos all the same form factor? Are there many PCIs in use? |

Use a central cooling system then network so you only > need a single monitor ,mouse and keyboard.Might save on space. > This can be done with little effort and you can even run Classic on a diskless, no hard drive, system also with no problem. I did this for a little while but it requires some Linux dexterity that I was no willing to put into it. The software is already done and can be gotten here: SCO Linux software You need to change a couple of things so you crunch for your own account instead of theirs and you need to make sure your network card is generic enough to not need drivers. Also the kvm switches can get REAL expensive if you want more than a 2 or 4 system switch. Lots of times the switch itself is i nthe $25.00 or so range but you then have to add the wires at extra cost. VNC, Radmin, there are others, is the way to go to control remote Windows based computers. Here is a link to some farms: some seti farms |

I checked the link, and there seems to be no connection to the bad boys;-) Gruesse vom Saenger For questions about Boinc look in the BOINC-Wiki |
