SATURN! SPECIAL MISSION COVERAGE
Cassini-Huygens' grand adventure begins...

The Cassini orbiter and the Huygens probe are now
exploring the magnificent and mysterious planet Saturn,
its emblematic rings and its extended family of at
least 31 moons. Together they comprise the
most complex and ambitious mission ever sent to
another world.

There is no doubt that, over the next several years,
we will be continually surprised, dumbfounded and
delighted with the discoveries they will radio back
to us on Earth.

special mission coverage at:

ET WHERE ARE YOU?
SETI SYMPOSIUM 2004 - THIS SUMMER AT HARVARD

Almost every one of us has looked up at the endless
night sky and wondered, "Are we alone?" and, after
pondering this profound question for a few minutes,
went on our way. But some scientists
(dreamers?, visionaries?, philosophers?) are dedicated
to finding an answer to the question.

This summer The Planetary Society invites you to spend
a day with an outstanding gathering of SETI experts
and research scientists.

Hear the latest news...
Ask questions...
Meet the experts...

INTERNATIONAL LUNAR MEETING IN BEIJING

The Planetary Society organized a special international
lunar session on May 28, 2004 as part of the United
Nations/European Space Agency (UN/ESA) Basic Space
Sciences Workshop in Beijing, China. Representatives
and specialists from the space agencies of the United
States, China, Europe, Japan, and India discussed ongoing
and planned lunar missions in the context of
planetary exploration.

Read more about the China Workshop at:
http://planetary.org/news/2004/lunar_meeting.html

The Planetary Society continues our mission to seek
international cooperation among spacefaring nations.
Stay tuned this month for more coverage on this hot
topic at: http://planetary.org

PLANETARY RADIO ADDS MP3 FORMAT

You can now listen to Planetary Radio as either a
Windows Media Audio file or an mp3 file. The mp3 file
is somewhat larger but should sound better. Feel free
to download either version to your portable
player and take us with you!

Haven't heard Planetary Radio yet?

Each week, Planetary Radio visits with a scientist,
engineer, project manager, advocate or writer who can
provide a unique perspective on the quest for knowledge
about our solar system and beyond. We also showcase
regular features that raise your space IQ while they
put a smile on your face.

This month on Planetary Radio we talked with:
David Anderson, Project director for the SETI @Home
project; Scientist Phil Christensen on why Endurance
Crater on Mars looks so promising; and Charley
Kohlhase, the Cassini Mission Designer.

Planetary Radio -- give us 30 minutes, we'll give
you the Universe!

SETI @HOME TURNS FIVE

Five years after The Planetary Society helped launch
SETI@home, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence
that utilizes a distributed computer system, the project
now operates as the most powerful computer on Earth and
has racked up an impressive list of accomplishments:

-- Nearly 5 million participants in 226 countries
-- Nearly 2 million CPU (Computer Processing Units) years of work
-- Over 1.3 billion results received

We thank our Members and supporters for their continued
support of this project. This is a tremendous
accomplishment.

600,000 SIGNATURES (AND PAW PRINTS) NOW ORBIT SATURN

When Cassini-Huygens entered orbit around Saturn on
June 30, it carried with it something very personal
from over 600,000 inhabitants of Earth -- their signatures
or, in some cases, their paw prints!

A small DVD, containing a record of 616,400 handwritten
signatures from 81 countries, is mounted on the Cassini
orbiter. Our Planetary Society volunteers spent months
sorting, counting, and scanning all of the signatures,
as well as the inked cat and dog prints from a few proud
pet owners, for the DVD.

Read more about how we participated in this mission at:
http://planetary.org/news/2004/cassini_signatures_0630.html

CASSINI-HUYGENS: SPECIAL INTERVIEW
CHARLEY KOHLHASE, SCIENCE AND MISSION DESIGN MANAGER

Learn more about the development of the Signature Disc
in this special interview with Charley Kohlhase, Cassini's
Science and Mission Design Manager.

Charles Kohlhase has spent more than four decades at
the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), working on such
missions as Mariner, Viking, and Voyager, as well as
Science and Mission Design Manager for the
Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn and Titan.

Here, Charley talked with The Planetary Society about
his other role on the Cassini-Huygens mission -- as
public outreach coordinator and creator of the DVD
Signature Disc that is onboard the Cassini spacecraft
orbiting the Ringed Planet.

ALPHABET SOUP: LEARN MORE ABOUT THE RINGS OF SATURN

What are they are made of?. . . How did they get there?
Did you know their actual order from
Saturn is D, C, B, A, F, G, E?

Thanks to centuries of telescopic observation and
especially to the photographs captured by the two Voyager
spacecraft, we recognize seven distinctly different rings
orbiting Saturn, each of them composed of innumerable ringlets.

Take a closer look at the "Lord of the Rings" at:
http://www.planetary.org/saturn/rings.html

MOON TO MARS COMMISSION REPORT RELEASED --
THE PLANETARY SOCIETY RESPONDS

The President's Commission on Implementation of United
States Space Exploration Policy, more commonly known as
the Moon to Mars Commission, has issued their official
report. We applaud the Commission's recommendation that
the United States' space exploration vision must be
managed as a significant national priority and as a
shared commitment of the President, Congress, and the
American people.

However, the Society questions the absence of two very
important elements in the report: a significant role for
international partners and a technical assessment of
realistic space transportation alternatives, which are
essential for any program to be both affordable
and credible.

THE SEARCH FOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL INTELLIGENCE
The Planetary Society's 2004 SETI Symposium
at Harvard University
August 7, 2004

On August 7, we will host a remarkable one-day public
event to examine humanity's quest to find intelligent
extraterrestrial life in the universe. We have gathered
together a group of the greatest SETI experts and research
scientists in the world to discuss everything from how
we are searching, to what we have and have not yet
discovered, to what's next in the search for
life elsewhere.

Here's your chance to meet the experts, ask questions,
and spend a day exploring one of the most profound
questions on Earth - are we
alone in the universe?

For more information and to
register for this event go to:
http://www.planetary.org/setisymposium2004.html

We look forward to seeing you there!
