Context: The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is a United Nations-sponsored initiative aimed at harnessing the potential of information and communication technologies to build inclusive and equitable information societies worldwide. BOINC has been nominated for a prize at the 2024 forum, and has passed initial hurdles; the next and last step ("Phase 3") requires public votes. The award would be a very nice boost and validation for BOINC and all our projects; if we can get our communities to vote, we should have a decent shot at this point...

Voting is pretty simple, takes just a few minutes; instructions are here.

(*The deadline for votes is Sunday: 31 March 2024, 23:00 UTC+02:00)

Good heads-up but...

  • Who are they?

  • What is the Prize?

  • Why Boinc for that one?

... And there is a bit of faff to sign up and register your email address...

And curiously, their website doesn't explain what this is all about...

What is this all about please?

Keep searchin',
Martin

I voted & used an unique alias/ throwaway email to register.

I never use my real email for much more than receive the throwaway emails that are forwarded to it.. Not even friends and family have it... It costs me nothing to have and it allows me to track/log where I have used each unique alias.

  • https://unctad.org/news/world-summit-information-society-5-things-know In 2005, WSIS concluded with an agreement known as the Tunis Agenda.
It was the first-ever, clear statement of political will to establish a people-oriented, digitally connected global society, harnessing information communication technologies (ICTs) to support development objectives in the wake of the digital revolution.
To attain this ambition, the summit identified several action lines, including areas such as the role of governments and stakeholders, ICT infrastructure, capacity-building and cultural diversity.

  • Recognition. The WSIS Prizes contest was developed in response to requests from the WSIS stakeholders to create an effective mechanism to evaluate projects and activities that leverage the power of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to advance sustainable development.

  • Largely for encouraging increased voluntary contributions. And BOINC deserves a cookie.

FYI: Voting shenanigans done.

There's quite an eclectic mix of other projects there to vote for in the other categories also.

Good luck to all!
