Given the results of somewhat too much 'Fake News' and deadly incitement ongoing in the USA at the moment, this is a hot topic that is being exercised at this very moment...

We have the beautiful ideals of:

History.com: First Amendment
wrote:
The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects the freedom of speech, religion and the press. It also protects the right to peaceful protest and to petition the government. The amendment was adopted in 1791...

... False or defamatory statements – called libel – are [not] protected under the First Amendment...

Wikipedia: First Amendment to the United States Constitution

... Although the First Amendment applies only to state actors, there is a common misconception that it prohibits anyone from limiting free speech, including private, non-governmental entities...

BBC News Tech Tent: Did social media inspire Congress riot?
wrote:
It was the most violent assault on the US Capitol since the British Army set it ablaze in the war of 1814.

This week's Tech Tent asks what role social media played in preparing the ground for the riots which saw Donald Trump's supporters storm Congress...

... is it even clear that social media bears most of the responsibility for spreading the lies and hatred that led to the assault on the Capitol?

Remember, Fox News, talk radio stations and more recently TV channels such as OANN and NewsMax have fed their audiences a Trump-shaped view of the world for a long time... Ever since the Reagan administration abolished the Fairness Doctrine in the 1980s, television news channels have been free to offer a partisan view. The result today is that viewers of Fox News and MSNBC might as well occupy two very different countries...

And note:

Words have consequences.

Also, is not "Fake News" a cynical euphemism for propaganda?...

One consequence:

Google suspends 'free speech' app Parler

Is "free speech" still free speech when hijacked such as to destroy that very freedom?

Unrestricted free speech is like a double edged sword (it cuts both ways) which is why we have laws here against speech that incites hatred, violence, racism and insurrection. ;-)

Young Adam has the right of it.

'My party has utterly failed the American people at truth'.

While Lying Donny and his Lying RINO's use the 1st as a shield to promote their lies. If these clowns get their way the U.S. will wind up being no better than China, North Korea or Russia where pure B.S. get fed to all.

Jones defiant in deposition in Sandy Hook hoax lawsuit.

Yet the moron is only making things harder for himself.

Well now that that young punk freeloader Jonesy has found out that words do have consequences and the 1st doesn't allow you to spout baseless lies after being hit with record payout he immediately hits his brain dead supporters.

Jones asked viewers for donations as nearly $1B verdict in Sandy Hook trial came down.

And the result has sent a big warning to other lying far right conspiracy theorists.

The far-right is in a panic after Alex Jones verdict shows they can’t lie with impunity.

Guess the right has no clue what the words "libel" and "slander" mean. Then again I don't believe they think anyone but a right wing zealot is a person.

And Rupert deserves to learn those consequences.

Why Fox News' lies about Trump's defeat probably aren't protected by the 1st Amendment

After all these decades of pandering utter B.S. he certainly deserves to be sent into bankruptcy.
