Well, here's a real kick in the pants!

[Farragut: i7-7700 @3.6GHz - Integrated HD-630] <<--- (Dad's System.)
[SETI ID: 7066606]

Name: Intel(R) HD Graphics 630
Vendor: Intel(R) Corporation
Driver version: 25.20.100.6373 <--- (Discovered Yesterday!) ---> Driver WAS: Driver version: 23.20.16.4973 Version: OpenCL 2.1 NEO
Version: OpenCL 2.1 NEO <--- (STILL with NEO)

--------------------------------------

Dad MUST have had a Windows Update hit... System now on 1903, and as Noted above,
the Video Driver HAS BEEN Updated - EVEN THOUGH I'm on Win 10 Pro x64, AND
HAVE Disabled Driver Updates!

I RECHECKED the Driver Updater to make sure it is DISABLED, ("Local Group Policy Editor"),
and using the instructions at the Site: How To Disable Driver Updates In Win 10 Pro x64,
CONFIRMED that Device Driver Updates are NOT to be Included with Windows Update - PER Settings!

Yet, here it is!!! Windows Overrode MY Settings and Updated the NEO Driver!

THANKFULLY, Farragut is STILL Crunching SETI, HASN'T Errored Out any Tasks.

GPU is STILL utilizing 6508MB, (6.5GB), System RAM taken from the
16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2400MHz, (2 x 8GB Sticks), System RAM.
So, 9.5GB System RAM is STILL left over for Windows and the System Environment.

System still seems responsive. No issues to report OTHER than the fact that
Windows Update IGNORED the Settings to NOT Update the Video Driver!

So, the Update hit sometime in the last week.

[Windows Update to 1903:]

Microsoft Windows 10
Professional x64 Edition, (10.00.17763.00) <<--- Before going to 1903 from 1809.

Microsoft Windows 10
Professional x64 Edition, (10.00.18362.00) <<--- After going to 1903 from 1809.

I had Feature Updates delayed for 180 Days and the other Updates delayed 35 Days.

I was SURPRISED and DISPLEASED that my Video Driver was Updated WITHOUT
MY APPROVAL... 🙁 😤😠😡🤬🤯

The Video Driver was on the Older Driver for about a year and a half... So, I have
NO IDEA why all of a sudden with 1903 that my Video Driver WAS FORCED
Updated to where it is now.

Hi TL,

Eventually, if one is still using Winders 10 solely for everything they do on a PC, Micro$oft will take over COMPLETE control of the PC and those users will have NONE. All updates will be mandatory, no ifs, ands or buts about it. There will be no more delaying updates to when one wants them installed.

I use Winders 10 solely for gaming a couple times a day, THAT'S it. I do everything else on Linux including BOINC. I'm now waiting for the time when Micro$oft will no longer allow dual booting if running Winders for any reason. That will be the day that I dump Winders into the nearest dumpster, set fire to it and go 100% Linux and give up gaming. They already forced CPU manufacturers to make it so one has to jump through hoops to run Winders other than 10 on their PC. What else are they going to get away with.

I highly doubt that Micro$oft has any fear whatsoever of the Government. They're pretty much getting away with whatever they want to do.

My apologies for this minor rant, but it upsets me to see users go through what you just went through. :)

Have a great day! :)

Just out of curiosity, I checked my favorite game retailer GOG and there are now around 1,200 of their titles with Linux editions. This includes best-sellers ie The Witcher series.

If your favorite game doesn't have a Linux edition, plenty of them work under WINE. For example, the WINE top 10 Platinum list (Platinum = All features work perfectly and completely with little or no configuration) contains EVE Online, StarCraft 1.16.1 (Brood War), Team Fortress 2 , Counter-Strike, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Company of Heroes, Spore and System Shock.

So, one needn't give up gaming (anymore!)

Totaly agree.

Adding to Mr. Kevvy info. Look in this site how to run a lot of the games available with steam, to play some you not even need to use wine, just follow the instructions and use your regular steam acount like you done with windows.

Hi Mr. Kevvy,

The only Winders game I play on a daily basis is World of Warcraft. Way back last year I tried to get it to run under Wine and it was a nightmare. I could get the game launcher to run, no problem. But, the game itself would not run. I even tried PlayOnLinux and it screwed with my Wine installation where nothing would work. I gave up, fixed stuff and decided to just keep booting into Winders when I wanted to play WoW. The only other game I played was Star Trek: Online, but I don't anymore for reasons I can no longer remember. The game runs nothing like the way WoW runs, for one thing. STO had instances and WoW does not, or at least it doesn't seem like it does. To go anywhere, stuff had to be loaded and reloaded blah, blah, blah. The game is full of loading screens. Not WoW. WoW has a few, but basically only when going from one expansion pack to another.

Anyway, if worse comes to worse and I end up burning Winders, then I'll check out games that run on Linux. Maybe I'll check them out anyway, just for GP. :)

Have a great day! :)

(Sorry if this offends, it's not meant to...)

Please stop with the Linux talk in this Thread. I, too, have tried Linux MANY times. I've tried StarCraft/BroodWar - 1.16.1 in Wine, even had to 'Update' Wine,
STILL had NO success. 1.16.1 on Linux under Wine STUTTERS through the whole game, from my experience. Games NEED Windows, apparently.
Even Mac Games are dwindling as Catalina seems to be giving MANY issues. Overwatch DOES NOT exist for MacOS. StarCraft:Remastered DOES.
WoW DOES - for now... MOST other Games are moving/have moved away from MacOS. (See Blizzard Forums for reference.)

[This ends Games Discussions and Linux Discussions in this Thread.]

'Til the next Windows flub-up...

Thanks everyone, just trying to keep this Thread on Topic. 😀

Windows has always zapped the boot loaders of any other operating systems on installation. So you had to either install windows before installing the other OS or boot a linux from an usb stick after windows installation to restore grub on the hard disk.

I used windows for gaming long time ago (win XP days and before) but nowadays I play all my games on Linux - Windows games too.

Hi Ville,

I cloned my existing Winders 10 installation from a 250GB M.2 drive to a 1TB M.2. I did the dual boot thingy after.

Let's honor TL and not mention the other OS, okay? :)

Have a great day! :)

Boot Loaders: Clover

Clover, (for Hackintosh), DOES NOT get "Zapped" by Windows.

It helps greatly IF one puts EACH OS on their own respective Drives instead of both on one Drive.
(This is how my Hackintosh runs. MacOS and Clover on the Primary SSD Drive, Windows 7 Pro x64
on its own SSD Drive. Each of my SSDs is 1TB.)

I've also built Dual Boot MacOS and Win 10 Systems. Win 10 CANNOT defeat Clover - IF the OSes
are on SEPARATE Drives.

Windows Update can insist on Reboot, Clover then picks up on the System Reboot, I select the Windows
Drive again, and Windows Update picks up where it left off. NO issues. MacOS Update - same thing,
NO issues.

Also, with modern BIOSes, (UEFI), one can just select a Drive to Boot from at will. So, NO NEED of
Boot Loaders between Linux and Windows on modern UEFI Systems.

[This Ends Dual Boot discussion in this Thread as it, too is Off Topic.]
