@ All who helped I have massive egg on my face, and I apologize profusely. When I was loading Ubuntu, clearing it, loading it, trying installing, clearing ..... it kept asking me for my password if I wasn't quick enough to enter another command. I got tired of using my normal, long password. So the next time I installed Ubuntu, I used a very short password. Made life much easier, BUT ... I did the same thing when I installed Ubuntu for real on the SSD and put BOINC in it. OK, no problem ... yet. Then I needed to share disks with Windows, and this thread came into being. I must plead Mea Culpa, Maxima Culpa! When Windows contacted Ubuntu and said, "This userid and password wants to talk with you", Ubuntu said, "I know the userid, but not the password!" [Gnashing of teeth and tearing of what little hair I have left]. Finally, after much reading online blogs and wiki entries, it occurred to me that I had different passwords. Change the short one to the regular one and -Voila!- they talk. So simple only a NOOB could do it. In my travels I did come across a free service that installs a "Network Neighborhood" type function in Linux. If anyone is interested, PM me. |
