I have been toying with the idea of switching from macos to linux but one thing that's putting me off is the performance difference.
When running SETI under macos i can use my CPU(i7-2600) and GPU(GTX 970) at 100% and still browse the web, watch youtube, write documents etc. without even knowing that SETI is using 100% CPU&GPU. My seti settings on mac are just to use all my resources all the time.

But under linux(have tried many distros), when seti is using 100% cpu&gpu the machine is pretty much unusable, the whole interface slows down to a crawl.
It helps to disable GPU computation, but the desktop experience is still not acceptable.

Does anyone know what might be causing this?

I am using 1 CPU and 1 Nvidia GPU on my Linux box in Einstein@home with a two cores Opteron 1210 aged ten years and I can still roam the Web and write to the message boards. GPU is GTX 750 Ti.

Hmm, thats very odd.
I'm currently using Manjaro linux, and found that if i set to use 4 of the 8 cores then i don't have any trouble.
Are you using the nouveau or nvidia driver?
