All other politics aside, the failure of the university administration to protect the constitutional rights of students of ALL viewpoints makes it an organization I can no longer support, even in the most tangential way.
If other students and faculty have to be hurt and suffer because of their employers stand, so be it. I will not be held hostage to culturally destructive behavior.
The STEM departments of any university should already be petitioning administration and demonstrating to let them know it's time to get back to a universities core mission.
Nobody WANTS to get involved in politics and that's a major reason we're in these dire straits.
I'm sorry...it may not be your 'fault' but you take their paycheck or pay them tuition and it is, in part, your responsibility.

Besides, I've well known for over a decade that your 2000 or so top contributors..those with access to steal time on big systems and/or have a garage full of salvage machines are doing all the work and i'm contributing nothing but second third and fourth re runs of the same data anyway.

Though I suspect, in the end, you'll find the 'social justice' types don't have the attention span/staying power to keep this program going.
If you don't touch it, you can't break it.

no..i'm citing the same rule about actions having consequences that was applied to peoples 'free speech'

3. Thou shalt recognize that speech has consequences to thine self and to others, some legal, some financial, some painful.
4. Thou shalt not force others to pay for the delivery of or the consequences of speech they may not agree with.
If you don't touch it, you can't break it.

That is your prerogative to not participate in arguably the most important science search in the history of mankind. Hopefully you will find something useful to do with your time and computers. As I am sure you know BOINC offers many worthwhile choices.

this was NEVER about 'finding ET' my friend.. The odds of picking up any signals with a receiver at the bottom of our atmosphere were always zero. Look into an analysis of signal strengths and distance attenuation if you really want to know.
What we're doing is providing free resources and a grant application justification to science departments and their students.
This in and of itself is worthy of course but it's not nearly mankinds most important scientific research.
If you don't touch it, you can't break it.

Since you believe that why have you been wasting resources on this project for all these years?

I think your calculator may need more digits. 😀 If you were correct, radio astronomy itself would never have detected anything, ever. It uses the same frequencies. The odds, to be certain, are very tiny, but very tiny != zero.

LOL ''order of magnitude'' look it up, make the concept yours. ''Signal to noise ratio'' would be beneficial also.
Radio Astronomypicks up transmitters that double as stars... the static from clouds of gas the size of a stellar cluster....

you need to learn to read more carefully. or stop being sullen...
That was a child's response. Unworthy of a science site.

You would then have to deny all those extrasolar planets, you know. Orders of magnitude smaller dimming and all.

you've been involved here for so long and can still make an inapplicable apples and oranges comparison like that? amazing.

do you REALLY think it's appropriate and seemly for a ''volunteer moderator'' to get so emotionally involved here as to be effectively trolling a user?
and THAT:S ''your kind''.
Just wanted to stay around long enough for you to prove it.

Strange, I don't think I'm being emotionally involved... I haven't insulted anyone and I certainly don't feel angry. I did try to point out some of the technical issues with your previous points about radio astronomy. The thread is called "sorry..must go" and all, so if you aren't leaving perhaps a change of title is in order?

I understand that you are not pleased with the political aspect of what is going in Berkeley right now, but this has absolutely nothing to do with science or SETI or this forum. If it matters, I don't like that radicals of any political stripe are causing these disturbances and stifling free expression either. Whatever happened to "I disagree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it." These aren't just pretty words... they are how civilized societies function.

That's "my kind" by the way.

your responses got childish and irrelevant starting with that picture of the solar system in fruits.
The ones before that were just generally meaningless...
Which you went to because you suddenly realized I was correct about signal to noise problems.
That's where you dropped the ball and got all emotional..when you stopped talking and tried to start taunting.

and you don't want to recognize it. yes. that indeed is 'your kind'

"Whatever happened to "I disagree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it.""

good question..because the tax money paid government employees of UC aren't showing any signs o it
