Washington (CNN)The US military has dropped an enormous bomb in Afghanistan, according to four US military officials with direct knowledge of the mission. A GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb, nicknamed MOAB, was dropped at 7 p.m. local time Thursday, the sources said. The MOAB is also known as the "mother of all bombs." A MOAB is a 21,600-pound, GPS-guided munition that is America's most powerful non-nuclear bomb. http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/13/politics/afghanistan-isis-moab-bomb/index.html |

Bombs of this size has little practical use in a war. The reason they are still used sometimes is that they may have a strong psychological effect. In the US they call them "Mother Of All Bombs" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9H50tHiHjs In Russia they call them "Father Of All Bombs" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2FGA3Z-oYM But President Donald Trump called it "another successful job" later Thursday. Hmm... OK... Let's wait for the damage reports. |

Bombs of this size has little practical use in a war. Yes. Little use. The U.S. Air Force dropped several BLU-82s during the campaign to destroy Taliban and al-Qaeda bases in Afghanistan to attack and demoralize personnel and to destroy underground and cave complexes.[7] American forces began using the bomb in November 2001[10] and again a month later during the Battle of Tora Bora.Successful? Last use of it before now was in July 15, 2008 in a missile firing range in Utah. https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/BLU-82#/media/File:Duke_Field_reservists_drop_last_BLU-82_bomb.jpg |

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said later Thursday. The strike "targeted a system of tunnels and cave that ISIS fighters use to move around freely." Wikipedia wrote: The MOAB is not a penetrator weapon and is primarily intended for soft to medium surface targets covering extended areas and targets in a contained environment such as a deep canyon or within a cave system. However, multiple strikes with lower yield ordnance may be more effective and can be delivered by fighter/bombers such as the F-16 with greater stand-off capability than the C-130 and C-17. |

Less is More:)Depends whether you want the primary effect to be on the enemy - or on your own newspaper editors :) |

Less is More:)Depends whether you want the primary effect to be on the enemy - or on your own newspaper editors :) I wonder if White House Spokesman Sean Spicer have forgot about Iwo Jima. The strike there was "targeted a system of tunnels and cave that Japanese soldiers use to move around freely". |

Iwo Jima"The island ... was useless to the U.S. Army as a staging base and useless to the U.S. Navy as a fleet base." ? |

Iwo Jima"The island ... was useless to the U.S. Army as a staging base and useless to the U.S. Navy as a fleet base." ? Still Iwo Jima is an icon of the US Pacific War in WWII. But my point is that trying to bomb other countries at war so they surrender is futile. Doesn't work. Never had. Oops. Unless nuke them... |

But my point is that trying to bomb other countries at war so they surrender is futile.Even that may not work. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky%C5%ABj%C5%8D_incident Bombing can go a long way to making them so miserable that they lose the will to fight and the ability to wage war or even feed their people. However to do that requires bombing that is a war crime such as Dresden across an entire country. |

Now it comes out this was an Obama operation that was waiting for them to gather so it would have good results. |

Now it comes out this was an Obama operation that was waiting for them to gather so it would have good results. And it was not a mission that required specific Presidential authorisation. |

Now it comes out this was an Obama operation that was waiting for them to gather so it would have good results. And it's still an ongoing war in Afghanistan where many countries are involved. Swedish mission in Afghanistan is Sweden's contribution to the international military intervention teams ISAF and the Resolute Support Mission in the now (2017) ongoing war in Afghanistan. The effort has been ongoing since 2002; initially as an intelligence unit. 15 years! Russia tried to stop the madness already in 1980 so Afghanistan has been at war at least for 37 years! |

First damage report. The bomb that the US military brought down in the Achin district in Afghanistan killed at least 36 IS-warrior, said Afghan authorities, according to AFP. Several caves that the terrorist group uses and hidden ammunition stocks should have been destroyed in the bombing, according to a statement from the Defense Ministry. It also says that there should not be any civilian casualties. Hmm. I have my doubts... |
