Johnny, you have it wrong. Just because someones name is on the ballot, that isn't who you are voting for. Your vote is for a slate of people. They are the ones who have to be qualified. (Who checks if the electors are actually residents of the state they are casting their ballot for? Legal age? etc.)

Johnny, you can't vote for President. You can only vote for electors - a slate of people. Doesn't matter what the machine wants you to think you are doing. The electors are free to vote for anyone they want to and frequently one does.

As to write in, depends upon which state you reside. Some prohibit, some restrict and a few allow.
