Message 1820290 - Posted: 28 Sep 2016, 21:17:06 UTC

I have a couple of Raspberry Pi computers that run boinc for seti@home. They've been chugging away happily since I started them late August. One of them is showing only 3 tasks in the queue with none waiting. It has always had 4 tasks processing up until this point.

I used "boinccmd --get_tasks" to report what's running and what's waiting. Normally there are a dozen waiting and my other pi has several stacked up. The pi contacted the server today and it is reporting "don't request more work: no". Checking the tasks for that computer online show 6 awaiting. Any thoughts?

I've run into the same issue with my farm. I have a feeling there might be some "server maintenance" going on with the S@H back-end. Either that, or Shaggie76 finally broke the servers with his new scripts :P.

Could be. Guess I'll have a look tomorrow and see if it's sitting idle or if it did get any more jobs downloaded. I hate having that one core sitting there doing nothing.... :D

If you've completed all your jobs and you don't want the processing power to go to waste, you can always pick another project to do temporarily. Once S@H is pushing jobs again, you can just change the project commands to "No New Tasks" and it will stop requesting jobs from the temporary project. Just make sure you've selected the temporary project image on the bottom pane.

I'm sure some less worked projects would appreciate the additional help, even if it's temporary.

I'm out of CPU tasks too, which is very odd; it's been a long time since such a thing happened. I checked the server status and I think it says there are 1/2 million WU available. Am I reading that right?

Okay, good, thanks. But, then, doesn't that mean any client that asks for tasks will get them? That's not happening.

Is your system asking for any work?

Try exiting & re-starting BOINC.
If you don't get any work, post the first 30 or so messages from the Manager Event Log (up to and including the requests for work, and the responses received) and people might be able to figure out what's going on.

I thought that is what this thread is about. Everyone here is asking for work and not getting any WUs, right? Maybe I'm hijacking this thread, but I thought that's what this was. Let me know and I'll open my own thread.

Good question though, my system is asking for GPU work, but not CPU work. I tried restarting. Except for a few SETI server outages and task queue depletion events over the years, I don't think this has ever happened. I ran out of CPU work two days ago. I checked my preferences, which I haven't even looked at in 15 years, and CPU work is checked. Let's ignore the GPU issue, for now.

Web preferences, or local preferences? If you checked the web ones then it's work checking the local ones in case there's something there.
BOINC Manager, Options, Computing preferences.
At the top it should say if you are using Web based or Local preferences.

EDIT- in the Web Preferences, under Seti@home, down the bottom there is an option "Run only the selected applications". Is SETI@home v8 selected?

You didn't post the first 30 lines of your log.

Is your location Default/Home/School/Work ?

Do you have "accept work from other applications" checked?

You have received AP GPU work, which leads me to think you are only requesting AP tasks.

No CPU request could be your cache size, if it's full enough it won't request more work. EDIT: Scratch that, you have no pending CPU tasks.

A few moments ago your computer was showing ~40 tasks in progress, many of which were delivered this morning. It is not unknown for the servers to jump into life and deliver tasks when someone asks a question about lack of tasks here!!!

Yeap, there's about 36 new CPU tasks since I last looked.

Ha! Actually, it was the cache! Good thinking. I've been worried about GPU tasks for so long that I forgot that CPU jobs take much longer so the cache could be full with just a few tasks. I'm used to seeing 50 waiting tasks and it didn't occur to me that the cache could be full with just a few. I bumped up the cache a bit, turned all the other projects to "no new tasks" and hit update. BOINC asks for and got new CPU tasks. Thanks!

I've never turned on or off any type of APP.

Thanks all. I am using local prefs, but there isn't a local preference equivalent to the "Use CPU" option on the Web. Right? I've never seen that in the local preferences. SETI GPU tasks are broken for me, so I wish there was a way to disable that just for SETI. I guess I should switch to the web preferences. I've been letting them fail for years hoping that it would get fixed and just start working. I reported it a while ago.

I posted the lines I could, I just restarted BOINC and there weren't 30 log lines in the log. I just selected the SETI project and hit show only this project.

Hmm, what does "accept work from other applications" mean? As I say, I haven't fiddled with the web preferences in forever.

Seti@home project preferences, de-select "Use ATI GPU". Save changes, then wait for the client to update (or click on update) once Local preferences are no longer selected.

Which makes it harder to figure out what's wrong.
Best to post everything, that way people can see what other things might be impacting on your ability to get Seti work.

Use CPU and/or GPU, and accept other work - They are in the seti web preferences and will only affect seti.

It is the (Preferences for this project --- SETI@home preferences) link in your account

Yeah, I saw where the preference is located; I stared at it for five minutes. I'm asking what does it mean? What other work would I get from SETI besides MB and AP work?

It is basically a, I will accept any SETI@Home work you give me (MB or AP) If you have both applications checked off, it really means nothing.
