This question is open to everybody. Just talk about why a particular U.S. president was the best in your lifetime.

I liked Ford. The man had a moral compass and he knew how to strike a political compromise.

I'm not really sure who was best. Maybe Reagan. I wouldn't have to think twice about the worst one though;-)

You're going to have to explain that one to me.

I'm going to have to second that. I can think of no man in that office who had to deal with the crap he did and made every decision correct and kept the country together. Perhaps because he didn't have to run for the office he was free to do the right thing.

Others have done great things, but they came with great wrongs too.

Truman #1

He definitely was in the hot seat.

Thinking about how each president has handled the historical events on his watch, I wonder how things would be different if we had say, Nixon, president during 9/11, or George Washington during WWII?

I'm veering off onto another idea for this thread...

Considering all the presidents in history, if you could do a switcheroo and take one president from one time period and put him another time period, who would it be, and why?

Any one, or even all, of the first five Presidents, into the present times, to see if they would change the constitution or any of the amendments.

The best U.S. President in your lifetime?
Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama got Nobel Peace Prizes in my lifetime.
The first Nobel Peace Prizes were handed out in 1901. Since then, 97 people and 20 organizations have received the honor, including three sitting U.S. presidents:
Theodore Roosevelt: Roosevelt, who was in office from 1901-09, was awarded the prize in 1906 "for his successful mediation to end the Russo-Japanese war and for his interest in arbitration, having provided the Hague arbitration court with its very first case."
Woodrow Wilson: Wilson, who was in office from 1913-21, was awarded the prize in 1919 for founding the League of Nations, the predecessor to the United Nations.
Barack Obama: Obama, who began his term in 2009, was awarded the prize just months later "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
The prize has also gone to one former U.S. president:
Jimmy Carter: Carter, who served one term from 1977-1981, was awarded the prize in 2002 "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development."

Seriously. Carter and Obama has not brought peace to the world!

Truman for obvious reasons, and
O'bama for saving the republic.

The last president to be responsible for his government.
Also because I liked it when he punched out a reporter

For some undocumentable reasons, and for sentimental reasons, JFK.
I do sincerely believe that he could have been the best president this nation has ever known, had he not been cut down in Dallas.

In my mind it is close between Eisenhower and Ford. Eisenhower because he realised the danger of the military industrial complex becoming too strong and because he initiated the largest construction project of its time, the interstate highway system.

Ford, because he served in Congress for so many years without becoming a millionaire while in office. That tells me his true intention was to serve his country and not his pocketbook.

Best? Best at what, exactly?

My opinions:

Most liked by the people? JFK.

Most hated by the people? A tossup between Reagan and Bush the Younger.

Best at forming a power base through bribing the electorate? LBJ.

Most moral? Carter, though it made him the best at being ineffective.

Best grasp of the powers of the office of President? Nixon, hands down.

Best grasp on foreign policy and the Intelligence agencies? Bush the Elder (former director of the CIA and also an ambassador).

Luckiest person to be President? The accidental president, Ford... Only person to EVER be President of the US without having been elected to be at least VP...

Best at increasing the size of the national debt? Obama.

Best at lying to the People (especially under oath) and getting away with it? Clinton.

In other words, to go along with ALL of their bad points, All of them were very good at something (be it positive or negative)...

Now then, picking among all of the past Presidents to get 'moved' to being president today... In my opinion, I would really like to see Thomas Jefferson as President today. 2nd choice: James Madison.

As to which of the Presidents during my lifetime would be my FAVORITE one, hmm... hard choice. I am highly inclined to say JFK or Reagan.

Don't blame me, I voted for Johnson(L) in 2016.

Truth is dangerous... especially when it challenges those in power.

A very thorough and well-thought out reply as always, KWSN - MajorKong. I enjoy reading what everybody has to say.

Does anybody remember a show on public tv back in the 70's called, "Meeting of the Minds"? I think Steve Allen hosted it. Each episode assembled several historical guests at a roundtable and they talked about current events. ~Kind of fits in with my question about which president from the past would you like to see in charge today.

Obama...

The country/world was in such a bad shape, he had to start working before he took the oath of office.
