Message 1807698 - Posted: 7 Aug 2016, 2:36:13 UTC

Good day,
today while cleaning up I found an system board with CPU I had sitting in the motherboard box. Is it an and fx8120,(8core CPU) Asus sabertooth 990fx motherboard, 8gb ddr3. I have two and 280x cards sitting around. My only missing peaces are power supply and case. Do you think I would be if it if I bring this system up?
Should I just replace motherboard and CPU in my current amd 280x system using the amd API.
Thank you

I'll ignore the quadruple post and just answer, Why Not?! Perfectly good hardware that is more than capable of feeding both of the 280Xs. Up to you whether you want to bother with running CPU tasks. Keep in mind you need to set aside one full core to feed each GPU task on the graphics card if you intend to use either the SAH or SOG app. The Sabertooth 990FX board is a wonderful AMD platform. I ran two of them for 5 years until my Gen. 2.0 board lost one of the PCIe X16 slots. I replaced it with a CHVFZ board which is even better. So go ahead and find a power supply and case for your next cruncher build.

The Assus Sabertooth is a great motherboard.
Have one running myself with an FX 8350.
It should be faster than your 5800K.

Go for it - the motherboard is a good one, and the CPU, while not exactly the fastest on the block will suffice.

I would suggest a 700 Watt single rail.

You can pick up some refurbished 750 W PSU from NewEgg Canada for not too bad of a price.

I run 750-850 watts PSUs on three out of four of my rigs (each has a pair of GPUs, select from GTX780, GTX960, GTX980. The fourth, which has three GPUs (2 off GTX970, one off GTX1080) has a 1000 watt PSU. In reality that may be slight over-kill, but it was sitting around doing nothing so it found a home.

Really some advise. I just finished putting the system together and it keeps on going off. I checked temps and all are good. PSU seems good. Not sure what I've missed.
Latest bios.

going off like it just turns off suddenly? even the PSU fan? i assume if that happens, first thing to suspect is the psu. i'm not sure how to test PSU stability, or whether it's putting out the correct amount of watts, even if it seems to be working. maybe the power strip or surge protector is bad? could try using a different one, or trying a different power outlet.

or does it go to blue screen or freezes? for my builds, the part that usually causes recurrent blue screen or freezes is RAM. i use memtest to test RAM.

Did you connect the EATX12V 8-pin power lead on your motherboard (1-36 in the motherboard manual)? You might be able to boot with just the 24-pin EATX lead but you might run into trouble under heavy load without the aux power lead connected.

Its connected. I discovered it could be the PSU, I returned it today. I need to source another one.
