I've been running SETI on my Snapdragon 808 Android phone for the past week or so. It’s no speed daemon but has got me thinking about FLOPS per watt. I noticed the Snapdragon 808 has an Adreno 418 GPU built in. Does anyone know if SETI supports this GPU? My log says “No usable GPUs foundâ€. I’m curious to see if the GPU is more efficient than my 6 cores. Eventually I would like to calculate the difference between a farm of ARM processors running at ~4 watts each to a desktop GPU. Does anybody know if these calculations already exist? Cheers Mark Loukko |

No, there are no OpenCL GPU applications yet for Android, not on this or any other BOINC project that I know of. Biggest trouble is of course to efficiently cool them, as calculations will generate a lot of heat. Perhaps not the wisest thing to want to do on a (small) handheld device. |

Thanks or the info Jord, Yes, heat can be a problem. Running all 6 cores will heat the phone very quickly. 3 cores keeps it under 37c. To run 6 cores concurrently I’ve invented a rather complex cooling system / heat sink: The phone lays down on an aluminum cooking pot turned upside down. Ok, maybe not complex but its surprisingly effective. The phone says below 29c even with 6 cores running. |
