Message 1783296 - Posted: 28 Apr 2016, 20:02:08 UTC

I just upgraded the version of BOINC from 6.6.20 to 7.6.22, and had a funny feeling that things didn't go properly the 1st try, as when it started up, there was no message in the log saying version update 6.6.20 -> 7.6.22, and it asked me to join a project, which was my first clue, so I re-ran it again, it asked me the same thing, and I ended up joining. After I cancelled it the 1st time (but before I closed it and installed it the 2nd time), I looked in the log and saw that it recognized SETI, but it wasn't attached.

This is an older gal, the ID is in the 4xxxxxx range, and I would like to keep the same ID as I had. Is it stored somewhere in a file on the computer that I can edit? I was thinking ahead, as I know how badly upgrades can go, so I copied the BOINC dirs from both the Program Files and Program Data dirs onto a USB drive, so I suppose I can remove the current version and copy back the info to get me to where I was before this started (though I don't know if I wouldn't have the exact same results when re-trying the upgrade again), but it would be much easier if I could just edit a text file and be done with it.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Sounds like your 'old' data directory (the v6.6.20 with the 4xxx ID number) isn't in the default location expected by the v7.6.22 installer.

The key is the data directory - that, and that alone.

Clean up your new ID by setting No New Tasks and processing/reporting all current work. Stop BOINC, and throw away that installation.

Copy the data directory from the USB drive to the working machine. Anywhere will do - your choice - but remember where you put it. Ignore the old program directory - you don't need it.

Run the new v7.6.22 BOINC installer. Stop at the screen where it shows the installation directories. It won't be right. Click the 'Advanced' button, and change the Data directory location (program directory doesn't matter) to the location you remembered for the copy of the USB backup.

Now complete the installation as normal. From what you've told us, it should work now.

Message 1783948 - Posted: 1 May 2016, 14:50:57 UTC - in response to Message 1783306.

Hello, I finally had a chance to get back to this one this morning, so I uninstalled Lunatics, and BOINC, deleted the data dir too just for good measure, then copied the old one back from the USB drive. Reinstalled BOINC making sure that it pointed to that dir, and after it installed, I saw it try to attach to SETI, and the log had the version --> update message. Yay!

So next, I installed Lunatics using the options I usually do, and when it restarted, I got an error message multiple times, which I will paste below. I thought I may have not checked something or checked something by mistake during the install, so I uninstalled Lunatics and re-installed it, and the same message comes up. Any thoughts as to where this might be coming from, as I did the un/reinstall 2x, the 2nd time I deleted the app_info.xml for good measure, as I think this is where these settings are loading from, and thought that if it somehow is reading the old one from before the uninstall, this would cure it, but it didn't. Thanks for any suggestions, I know I'm close at this point.

I would re-install the Nvidia drivers as you seem indeed to be missing OpenCL

Here are the lines from my machine

01/05/2016 16:09:00 | | CUDA: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 970 (driver version 364.72, CUDA version 8.0, compute capability 5.2, 4096MB, 3347MB available, 4045 GFLOPS peak)
01/05/2016 16:09:00 | | OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 970 (driver version 364.72, device version OpenCL 1.2 CUDA, 4096MB, 3347MB available, 4045 GFLOPS peak)

Yours shows no OpenCL.

Did you get the driver form the Nvida website or Windows?

I would download the driver from Nvidia and try again

Driver problem. Back it down a bit from 364.72: do a fresh, clean, driver install with an earlier WHQL driver direct from nvidia.com

Acutally, it's just that my network cable is unplugged until everything is straightened out, as I don't want it downloading any tasks till it is.

I remember that I had issues during the video driver upgrade process, after upgrading this drive from the release candidate version of Win 7 to the full version, and then to SP1. I tried installing it using the normal EVGA driver installation, doing a clean install, but it didn't work and as it's been a pretty busy computer week for me, I don't remember the exact issues or errors. I just ended up backdooring it, going into device manager and doing the driver update manually, which seemed to work fine, but apperently didn't install some dependancies? Well this should be interesting, wish me luck, my guess is I am going to need it!

Well, that went suprisingly well. Scarily so, to be honest. One thing that I did with this install was to just install the video driver and the HD audio driver. I left off all the physics, 3D stuff, and other assorted crap that it wants to install, though I believe I usually do install the physics stuff, because I remembered reading in a thread recently that it was needed or improved performance in some situations, 25% was the number I remember, but don't recall what it was in reference to, if it was Linux, or Windows?

Regardless, it appears that it is happy now, so I'm going to turn on the tap for a bit and see how she runs.

going into device manager and doing the driver update manually,

That gives you a basic cut down Windows driver that does not have OpenCL.

For crunching the only way to get the full driver is from the Nvidia website.

For my "crunching only" machines I only ever install the video driver. As I play games on this machine I install everything except the Geforce Experience as it has never worked correctly on this machine.
