Two tasks on one of my computers (7934995) have ended in error, with stderr showing many occurrences of the message:
ERROR: unsupported OpenCL runtime version: OpenCL 1.1 AMD-APP-SDK-v2.4 (650.9). Please update drivers! Exiting...

Here's one for your convenience: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=4733582498

But (1) the computer's GPU seems to be being used at least a little for other tasks, and (2) I don't understand why the computer would be given work that it can't run, and the server seems to know a lot about its GPU.

I looked for driver updates on Acer's web site but couldn't find anything that seemed to apply. I'm fairly driver-ignorant; is that the best way to find drivers?

It's been awhile since we purchased this computer, but as far as I can tell it's an Acer Aspire X1430 desktop. OS is Win7 x64.

I also tried the AMD web site for drivers, and they also appear to have nothing for me. This page seems to apply to me, in particular the "HD 7000 Series (HD 7600 and below)" part: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/legacy?product=legacy3&os=Windows%207%20-%2064http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/legacy?product=legacy3&os=Windows%207%20-%2064

The GPU is "legacy" about 4.5 years after purchase.

But my questions (1) and (2) remain.

Your present CAL version is now lower than the minimum required 11.12
The server cannot check the driver version, it just gets the message from BOINC that the GPU is detected and therefore it thinks it is capable. And thus that's why it gets sent work.

But the science application also checks for the version of OpenCL, and sees that yours isn't adequate, so it kills trying to run the task before any tasks run 'fine' foul up the science database with 'bad' outcomes.

You say it doesn't work with the 15.7.1 drivers, what kind of error message do you get? Have you tried to full uninstall the Acer video drivers (usually through add/remove programs, but otherwise through Device Manager, prior to installing the AMD drivers?
What if you try with http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous/detail?os=Windows%207%20-%2064&rev=12.1?

This computer is still spending a significant amount of time on GPU tasks that then error off due to OpenCL level. I appreciate the attempt to help, but I'm not inclined to play try-this-then-try-that with this computer, which could dig me a hole that I lack the knowledge to climb out of. I didn't sign up for that.

I'm surprised that there isn't a central list of specific drivers that are known to work for each GPU model, maybe with a specific pointer to the driver download where that is known. If there is a driver that would work for this computer, it seems highly likely someone is already successfully using it for this project somewhere on the planet.

Failing that, would it be possible to search the database for computers with the same GPU? If so, perhaps that would provide one or more leads.

Failing both, is there a way to prevent GPU tasks from being requested by this computer, while continuing to receive them for the other computers on the account?

This "significant amount of time" seems to be (for your GPU/driver) only 5 minutes/task:

I'm surprised that there isn't a central list of specific drivers that are known to work for each GPU model

And who will make that list?

There is "ATI Driver Version Cheat Sheet" made by one of the users (HAL9000):
http://www.hal6000.com/seti/boinc_ati_gpu_cheat_sheet.htm

As you can see: "Cat 11.12 Is the minimum required driver for current applications."

I don't know what is your GPU model/OS - people which know technical details about driver versions best for a given GPU model/OS post in Number Crunching

You're right, perhaps I shouldn't be concerned about the ~65 minutes of wasted computer time since 17 Feb (assuming that none of the error task entries have been deleted by BOINC), or the wasted network time. Still, that GPU is not being used for productive work, when it possibly could be with the right driver.

And who will make that list?

The information could be contributed by users via these forums. Think of it as a centralized knowledge base for GPU drivers, more organized than the scattered, limited, and often vague or unclear information in existing forums. For example, I could attest that driver version 20.19.15.4331 works for MB and AP applications, on the Intel HD Graphics 4600 GPU - under Windows 10 x64 if that's significant (others more knowledgeable than I would have to decide exactly what information items are significant). That driver came pre-installed with that computer, but, if I had installed it myself, I could also provide the URL of the download that I used. There are multiple ways this could be implemented, such as a sticky thread or a separate forum, with or without a separate consolidated page maintained by someone monitoring the user posts.

I don't have an ATI GPU, the GPU in question is an AMD. The relevant host page is at: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=7934995

I don't know what Cat 11.12 is, I don't see anything called "Cat" for this computer.

ATI/AMD is the same company as AMD bought ATI.

The driver cheat sheet works for both.

Thanks, that's a critical piece of the puzzle. Now, how to use the cheat sheet? Should I simply go to the "Current Driver Download" for 64-bit Win7 in the bottom table? If so, there are three "DOWNLOAD" buttons on the target page; any idea which one to use?

I don't know what Cat 11.12 is, I don't see anything called "Cat" for this computer.

"Cat" is a truncated form of Catalyst (as in Catalyst Software Suite, which includes graphics drivers and other dependent/required software for the suite). The two #s before the dot represent the last two digits of the year it was released, and the two #s after the dot represent the month of the year it was released. This can be seen in the first and last columns of HAL9000's Cheat Sheet.

Should I simply go to the "Current Driver Download" for 64-bit Win7 in the bottom table?

I will suggest No
You GPU is a few years old model and the last "Current Driver Download" may:
- work slow
- not have a OpenCL part (= will not be able to do calculations/Computing)
- may not work at all
- may even refuse to install

(I'm on Windows XP and for my AMD ATI Radeon HD 6570 I use Catalyst 11.12)

Your driver 1.4.1417 corresponds to Catalyst 11.6
Older Catalyst versions (<11.12) are listed on "full version list":
http://www.hal6000.com/seti/boinc_ati_gpu_cheat_sheet_full.htm

On the page here your GPU is shown as what BOINC detected:
AMD Radeon HD 6200/6300/7200/7300 series (Wrestler)

What is the real/exact model?
If you don't know use GPU-Z or GPU Caps Viewer:
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/
http://www.ozone3d.net/gpu_caps_viewer/

Is this GPU embedded in the CPU?:
AMD E-450 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics

You may try Catalyst 12.1 (it have the minimum required driver "SDK 2.6")
The link is from "ATI Driver Version Cheat Sheet":
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous/detail?os=Windows%207%20-%2064&rev=12.1

Old drivers before Catalyst 12.1 were deleted from the ATI AMD site ~year ago.
So if some driver works OK - keep the setup so you can re-install the driver in the future if needed.
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/12-1_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe

In the Catalyst 12.1 setup (in CX132103.inf (the setup .exe can be opened by 7-Zip)) are listed these models for AMD Radeon HD 6200/6300

AMD68F9.4 = "ATI Radeon HD 6230"
AMD68E1.12 = "ATI Radeon HD 6230"
AMD68F9.5 = "ATI Radeon HD 6250"
AMD68E1.13 = "ATI Radeon HD 6250"
AMD68F9.6 = "ATI Radeon HD 6290"
AMD68F9.7 = "ATI Radeon HD 6350"
AMD68E1.14 = "ATI Radeon HD 6350"
AMD68DA.1 = "ATI Radeon HD 6390"

AMD68E1.23 = "ATI Radeon HD 6230"
AMD68F9.17 = "ATI Radeon HD 6230"
AMD68F9.18 = "ATI Radeon HD 6350"
AMD68F9.19 = "ATI Radeon HD 6350"
AMD68F9.20 = "ATI Radeon HD 6350"
AMD68F9.21 = "ATI Radeon HD 6350 Graphics"
AMD68DA.4 = "ATI Radeon HD 6390"

AMD68E1.26 = "AMD Radeon HD 6230"

AMD68F9.29 = "ATI Radeon HD 6230"
AMD68F9.30 = "ATI Radeon HD 6250"
AMD68F9.31 = "ATI Radeon HD 6290"
AMD68F9.32 = "ATI Radeon HD 6350"
AMD68E1.28 = "ATI Radeon HD 6350"
AMD68DA.8 = "ATI Radeon HD 6390"

AMD68F9.33 = "ATI Radeon HD 6230"

AMD68F9.34 = "ATI Radeon HD 6250"
AMD68F9.35 = "ATI Radeon HD 6290"

AMD9803.1 = "AMD Radeon HD 6250 Graphics"
AMD9805.1 = "AMD Radeon HD 6250 Graphics"
AMD9807.1 = "AMD Radeon HD 6290 Graphics"
AMD9802.1 = "AMD Radeon HD 6310 Graphics"
AMD9804.1 = "AMD Radeon HD 6310 Graphics"
AMD9806.1 = "AMD Radeon HD 6320 Graphics"
AMD9642.1 = "AMD Radeon HD 6370D"

But since now Catalyst 11.6 works (for display/games/graphics) your GPU should be supported by Catalyst 12.1

If you want to know which is the last good working driver for your GPU - ask in Number Crunching
