Can someone from outside SETI@Home come to this Website, (if I paste the link to here on the outside site), and create a new account, (NOT installing BOINC), and make use of the PM system to PM me, and me them??? I only ask because the message system at the other site is NON functional, and there's things the two of us need to discuss; but, I don't think that the discussions are good for an open forum there where everyone can read... If this is better off in NC; then, I give permission for the Thread to be moved there. :-) TL TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

Just tested on my parents' computer. The person I need to talk to privately can create an Account here without installing BOINC - for now. Maybe later, they will end up installing BOINC and participating in crunching... Don't know, yet. TL TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

I think that ability is a bad idea and I wonder why you didn't go with Skype or many other similar options? Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes. |

Just tested on my parents' computer. The person I need to talk to privately can create an Account here without installing BOINC - for now. Yes they can, but they won't be able to post without a RAC, once the "new member" wears off. However I'd suggest e-mail, or any of the instant messenger services as a better option. Even IRC on your own channel. Or creating a "group" on Yahoo or Google that is private invitation only. Jord will hate me, but the BOINC board might be better than the Seti board if you have no other option long term, as RAC isn't an issue there. |

It would be far simpler to use email, or one of the many chat programs, than use the PM system which is intended for the use of participants in SETI. There is one exception to this - when a genuine new participant is looking for help, they may need to "talk" to one of the support team more reactivity than is possible through the bulletin board. Personally I would like to see accounts that never have a computer attached, or never run any tasks, "die" after say 30 days - this would get rid of the "drive by" merchants. (I say "run" because it is quite possible to have problems that result in lots of errors or invalids and so need a lot of help, the user has been trying, but hasn't actually managed to gain any credit) Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

We aren't talking about people like yourself who are crunching what and when they can, but about people who only crunch enough to be allowed to post, and then post in a "somewhat destructive" manner. To add to the conversation..... I got a friend request the other day from somebody. New account, no creds, no computer shown, and their profile listed a bunch of balderdash about buying facebook or twitter hits or some such nonsense. Obviously fishing for something. Needless to say, I declined. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

...you got that one as well - my reaction was the same as yours. People like that certainly make a case for there being a minimum requirement for PMs Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Well, I didn't mean this to be an "abuse" of our PM system; just a possible alternative to a NON-existent system at the other site where certain health issues have been brought up there. These health issues between the two of us REALLY need to be discussed more in depth; and, at the time I didn't even consider Skype, (as Sarge suggested), until after it had been suggested. I was focused on a private PM system like we have here. Also, it might have been possible that after using the PM system here, the person of interest might have been persuaded to add BOINC at a later time and crunch. (My thoughts, anyway...) The person of interest, has NOT yet created the account here; and, may choose NOT to do this... I was just asking if it were possible to do. I didn't realize it would open a "can of worms" here... That was NOT my intention. TL [EDIT] Also, the use of the PM system here would NOT have been a permanent thing. Just until the other site straightens out why their PM system is NOT working now... @Rob. When I first made my account. I had computer issues somewhere with BOINC. It would not run at all period. So my account was left to collect almost 18 months of dust bunnies on a shelf. I had another unrelated software problem and had to take it in to a shop to sort it out. It was a long time before I remembered about my account and gave BOINC another try to get running. I am glad that there is no time limit to get crunching. Or this post would not be here. |

And possibly make a difference between RAC and credit as well. I have quite a bit in total here. |

I would say a figure of 20 for general chat, and a figure of 100 for access to post at Politics. I would not class an RAC of 162 as a "low end contributor". All crunchers are welcome at seti, but as has been pointed out, there are some with very minimal RAC's that are clearly "using" the boards for their own purposes rather than seti's. And please note that I said some, not all. There are dedicated Seti supporters out there who can't afford to do any more than they are doing. To hopefully answer the question about posting in politics. politics offers a more less restricted posting leeway. You can speak your mind just a wee bit more freely. There were some posters back a few years ago who took advantage of that and them some to post there agenda. And one of them at the end did keep a miminal RAC just to keep posting. As long as a person crunches. They can speak their mind as far as Im concerned. But you will learn who has an agenda real fast no matter what there RAC is. After many years of arguing with them, I find the best way is to not take the bait and ignore them. They do go away eventually.
Old James |

I support James's post 100% There are always some. There are even those who run off in a huff but still have an agenda and come back for short drabbles only to run off again. |

Which Is why you don't find me posting in politics to much these days. I refuse to bite. I still check the forum out everyday. Just in case a certain subject is brought up.
Old James |

The New Account issue for PM-ing is moot, now. The other site got its act together and FINALLY fixed their PM system. This Thread can now be closed and locked. :-) TL TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |
