Magnificent Vid. Maybe Best Music Vid I've Ever Seen. Love Black and White. Fantastic Vocal. Fantastic! You highlight all the important parts of the visual experience. Dude, thanks for listening. |

OzzFan, Thank you for the link. I liked it! As I grew up on S&G I loved that song from the start. In this day and age, This cover captures more of what they sang about so many years ago. Indeed, James, indeed. And dare I say, this song appropriately adds the passion that was kinda missing in the original (no disrespect meant to fans of the original). |

... then slowly getting angrier at the inability to help change the world around him, before finally settling into acceptance of the sound of silence. Agreed. I listened to the original, and as beautiful as it was, it was missing that passion this version brings to the song. You said in a prior post that this wasn't necessarily one of your favorite S&G songs to begin with, and that's probably true for others as well. I don't think this was one of their more popular songs. Certainly not as popular as, say, Mrs. Robinson or Bridge over Troubled Water. In my humble opinion, the ability of a band like Disturbed to be able to bring this song to life almost 50 years later, really says something about not only the masterful songwriting, but to put the right spin on the performance of the song itself to make something old beautiful and new again. |

Thanks OzzFan - the neighbours are going to "enjoy" it when I do a rig test this weekend ;-) There's very few songs I think need to be listened to loud, to fully experience the emotion of it. This song is one of them. Enjoy! ;-) |

The S&G song that I thought might do with a similar makeover is The Boxer, In the clearing stands a boxer On volume, I tested it yesterday at full wick with 200W + 200W rms, with 12" base speakers. |

I have since a youth when I first heard it, identified quite strongly with 'The Boxer'. That feeling only got stronger as I got older and realized some of it's truths applied to myself more and more and more. 'Seeking out the poorer quarters where the ragged people go........' The thread title is becoming more and more and more appropriate as well. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

I cover that song (though less often) and have also occasionally done "I am a Rock" which is the main song by S&G that I thought deserved a hard rock/metal cover. Not just because of the word "rock" in the title/choruses, either. :) Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes. |

Just listened to Scarborough Fair. Definitely a lovely song. I'm reading that it has additional verses to be sung by a female in a duet. I can just imagine this one being sung in medieval times with a lute. |

I listened to Disturbed's cover to S@G Sound of Silence once more. WOW. It raised the hair on my arms. That is the best cover I have ever heard. I also watched the interview with the singer. Im really impressed. They did a cover right. I sure hope that this song can get some widely deserved air time on radio stations. Its needs to be heard. I don't remember the boxer off hand. I will look that one up.
Old James |

Thanks for the link Mark. I have heard that song before. Just never really ever paid attention to the words that close before. That is a very lonely song. Reminds me of Harry Chapins Taxi.I would add a link. But as this is OzzFans thread I don't want to go off topic. I think most of us can relate to being that alone at times in our life. Thanks for the link Mark. I have heard that song before. Just never really ever paid attention to the words that close before. S&G's "I Am a Rock" is about choosing to self-isolate: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=simon+%26+garfunkel+i+am+a+rock+. Heavy Metal band Disturbed recently did a cover of their song The Sound of Silence It's not very often that a cover is better than original. This one is. It's not the first time that a singer-songwriter song are interpreted by a rockband. Jimi Hendrix did a cover of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower. I think I read somewhere that Bob thinks Jimi's version is better:) |

Heavy Metal band Disturbed recently did a cover of their song The Sound of Silence Some Battlestar Galactica(2003), neat find there Sarge. The song in the series had to do with Jump Coordinates, to Earth, Starbuck used them and failed to retract the flight pods, breaking the Galactica's back. I would add a link. But as this is OzzFans thread I don't want to go off topic. Thank you OzzFan. I love this song by Harry Chapin. TAXI I heard him doing a radio interview that at one time he did drive a taxi. And that was his motivation for righting the song. He has done a few songs about being lonely. His WOLD and the Cats in the cradle sure seem lonely to me. I find that most covers leave a lot to be desired. I give you Josie Feleicianos light my fire as the worst I can think of offhand. However Joe Cockers rendition of the Beattles I get buy with a little help from my friends was liked very much by John and Paul. I too think its a better.
Old James |
