Heavy Metal band Disturbed recently did a cover of their song The Sound of Silence, and I'm completely blown away by lead singer David Draiman's versatility in this song. Giving up his distinctive rough "demon" voice for some amazing vocal work at the beginning... like a sad and haunting remembrance of depressing childhood memories... then slowly getting angrier at the inability to help change the world around him, before finally settling into acceptance of the sound of silence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Dg-g7t2l4

This is obviously going to have limited appeal since metal very popular among this crowd, but give it a listen if you want to. It has a certain beauty to it that I thought I'd share.

Wow. I am truly amazed by that performance. My general impression of metal is that it's all screaming and distortion. In this case, I was better able to understand the words than in the original S&G recording. It's still not quite my thing, musically, but I think I can say I like it.

Well done! Also not what I would expect from Heavy Metal. Loved the passion in his voice and the visuals.

Thanks for that Ozzfan, probably the best cover of S&G's Sound of Silence, IMHO.

And WOW from the kittyman as well.
Amazing and powerful rendition of the song...brought me chills.
The early Simon and Garfunkel material and albums are very dear to my heart, and this is indeed a worthy cover.

I was also raised on S&G and didn't start listening to rock until 1983, then metal wshortly thereafter.

My own former favorite (progressive?) ,etal band covered Scarborough Fair long ago.

I will have to listen to Ozzfan's post later in the day.

It's good, but could be better, knowing somewhat his voice.

Sounds like what I do when I perform "Hurt". Somewhat like Johnny Cash (the coverer) on the first verse/chorus then a bit like NIN on the remainder. (For those who do not know, hear my words, I'll teach you: Cash did NOT write "Hurt". He still kicked butt, though.)

Well I'm pleasantly surprised that many of you took the time to listen to a metal band, and even more pleased that you all seemed to enjoy it.

@ David S. - Yeah, I'm not really into the screaming metal, though I suppose that depends on your definition of screaming. I prefer metal bands that can actually sing, as to me, that is what music is all about. Bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Disturbed, AC/DC, Avenged Sevenfold, etc. are good examples. The screaming metal, a.k.a. Death Metal, is not something I really get into. I'm really glad you liked it though, even if metal isn't your cup of tea.

@ Carlos - I'm glad someone mentioned and noticed the passion and the visuals. Very powerful and very important to the point of the song, I think.

@ Rob - well I hope in your case "something" means good. I'll assume from the smiley that it is indeed the case for you.

@ Vic - No worries on the name. :-) Glad you liked it too.

@ Gordon - Cool! Another fan of the song! :-)

@ Mark - Admittedly, I'm a bit surprised that you liked it. I know how much music, and rock 'n roll in particular, mean to you. I'm glad to hear, as a fellow music lover, that you were impressed with it.

@ Sarge - I'll have to check out Scaborough Fair. Never heard of them before. I do have to respectfully disagree with you on the song though. I'm thoroughly impressed and don't think it could have been any better than it currently is. I haven't been emotionally touched by a song like this in quite some time. This was truly amazing, IMHO.

Thanks all for listening and replying.

Starting at 2:47 here, you can hear front-man David Draiman talking about the band's decision to perform this song, and his personal retelling of how it made him feel to push himself to do a song like this.

Scarborough Fair is a song, the proper name of the song better know by its repeated words parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. The performers Sarge linked to are Queensryche, which I've heard of but never been interested in or listened to before this moment. I'm less impressed with this than with the other one. (But SF was never one of my favorite S&G songs anyway.)

Hopefully Ozzfan will see this as part of a larger discussion spawned by his original post rather than steering it too far away ... .

Here is a version the vocalist Geoff Tate did with another band before he joined QR: Myth: Scarborough Fair. (Warnings (bad pun, for QR fans): poor recording quality and Geoff stays in the high range the whole time).)

More later, (comments & links) if ok with Ozzfan?

Anyway, "Sounds of Silence" allows for more emotion than "Scarborough Fair", anyway, simply by the topics. Also, wasn't "Scarborough Fair" covered by S&G; isn't it a song that is several hundred years old (or at least the melody, if not the words)?

OzzFan, Thank you for the link. I liked it! As I grew up on S&G I loved that song from the start. In this day and age, This cover captures more of what they sang about so many years ago.

Scarborough Fair has, as Sarge says, been around for well over 300 years. The words have varied in that time, as one would expect for any oral tradition song - I can think of at least half a dozen variations all claiming to be "the original".
Scarborough Fair is very much a simple ballad, so has little opportunity for the emotion that can be put into a song that grew out of the various 1960s protest and anti-war movements, the S&G version is very much of its time and genre, in the same way the Disturbed's version is of its time and genre. (I must see if I can find a higher sample rate rip of the Disturbed's version so I can more fully enjoy it - the little PC speakers just don't do the subtleties that are hinted at justice)

I agree about the speakers. I do most of my listening with Sennheiser headphones. I also downloaded and made a audio MP3 of the video from Youtube so I can watch and listen to it offline.

Thinking more about it, even S&G got kind of loud in that one part, although I would not want to call them "angry."
