I have no problems with the firearms laws here and I can still pop just out of town to get a rabbit or 3 for the cook pot. I have a category B license though I now only own a category A rifle (any other license is only for professionals).

Before Port Arthur I owned 9 firearms, but I had no qualms about handing in the 4 firearms I owned that became illegal to the general public after Port Arthur (a semi-auto shotgun, a pump action shotgun and 2x semi-auto .22 rifles which I was reimbursed extremely well for).

Then since the birth of my 2nd generation of kids I sold off my 4 remaining centre-fire rifles, leaving me with just my .22 magnum bolt action repeater (which is more than good enough for anything around here, but I do still have access to category B firearms if I need to).

I also own rifles a .22 automatic (modified) a 243 bolt action , a lever action 45-70 Winchester and a pump action shot gun .

On 1 hunting trip we went off into the bush leaving 1 fellow back at camp (he was whining and carrying on) after about 2 hours we came back to the camp and was on top of a hill looking down 1/2 drunk and stoned we saw a can on a stump about 75 meters away next to a creek and opened fire on it . When we stoped a hand came up and our friend had been doing a no. 2 behind it as you can imagine he was pretty peed off with us and he was right . We where 18

Not that it has anything to do with Australian gun laws but it does show guns are dangerous

I gave up my guns only a few years later when 1 of my cousins nearly killed himself after splitting up from his wife and I figured then it's just to dam easy to kill yourself and others even if you didn't intend to kill them .

I'm 52 and I gave them up when I was 23 , 30 years ago and back then you could buy guns in department stores or sporting goods stores .

I am glad we have the laws we do as it was just way to easy back only 30 years ago all you needed was a car licence to get your gun permit as it was called back then .

while watching Preppers the other day 2 Texans where showing of how they could make IUD's to protect themselves in a dirty bomb attack . Both guys in a tower made of steel , Cowboy (he was wearing a cowboy hat) shoots his gun explodes the IUD , his mate has high powered assault rifle however he's sitting only a few inch deeper in the tower so mussel is still inside of the tower
Pulls trigger and the cowboys nearly goes deaf gets sick , vomits and gets cranky as a viewer and having a weird sense of humour I could not stop laughing at both of them .

Point to both stories is guns are extremely dangerous even when people are so called experts as the cowboys said he was . I hope we never change our laws if you want a gun that bad then jump through the hoops , do the training or whatever it takes . GUNS are not needed in the general public or by city slickers and you don't need a arsenal to hunt . What Wiggo has is perfect for where he lives but not for someone living in Milperra and it's still is known as the place the Milperra Massacre happened .

We were on the brink of catching up to you guys before we bit the bullet and did something about it.

Death by firearm dropped down to than 25% of what it was, armed robberies that were going on here every other day has dropped down to less than 20% of what it was and not a "mass shooting" since.

I know where I'd rather be. ;-)
