Message 1743881 - Posted: 21 Nov 2015, 17:26:52 UTC

So I recently assembled a new/old late 90's retro PC to compliment the rest of my fleet. Specs are AMD K6-2+ 550mhz, 768mb ram, 3Dfx Voodoo3. I built it primarily for DOS/98SE 3Dfx gaming, but I also have it dual booting Windows 7 and thought I would let it run a work unit or two just for fun. So far, it has failed on 3 of 3 work units with the stock s@h x86 app.

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=7830684

Does anyone know if the s@h app simply requires an instruction set not present in the K6-2+? Or is there some other setting I can try to get it to work? Before failing, the BOINC estimated time to completion was approximately 40 hours :).

The CPU needs at least SSE to work.
The K6 2 doesn`t support it.

See inside the WUs logfile:

Unhandled Exception Detected...

- Unhandled Exception Record -
Reason: Illegal Instruction (0xc000001d) at address 0x637414EE

Engaging BOINC Windows Runtime Debugger...

So yes, your CPU lacks needed instructions, obviously the SSE instructions.

Not really

I used (and may again use) K6-2+ on Windows 98 / Windows 2000
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=3412467
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/host_app_versions.php?hostid=3412467

"Number of tasks completed 57"
It have "Consecutive valid tasks 0" just because the last task was "Time out"

Using:
app_info.xml
stock setiathome_7.00_windows_intelx86.exe (MD5: 61ed886de72526d5c9adda9fc120df0f)
PSAPI.DLL (MD5: 7f7005d2f1d9c579179807818c3ac4c7) from Windows 2000 (needed when I run on Windows 98) put next to setiathome_7.00_windows_intelx86.exe
Old libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll renamed to libfftw3f-3-3_upx.dll (MD5: faef6807b4fe889a33647a661c52d99e)

(The problem with the new "real" libfftw3f-3-3 is that it needs CMOV instruction) - Not SSE

Thank, BilBg. I honestly wasn't sure if SSE was a requirement or not. I'll sit down with it this evening and see if I can get it working!

Same here , Decided to build a vintage PC some weeks ago (Pentium I @ 100mhz ,32Mb RAM , Win98 SE) , My idea was using it to play 16bits games and old software , But I thought .. "Imagine this piece of museum searrching for extraterrestrial life" , However , It went unsucessful and doesn't get any tasks . http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=7820731
Maybe the client is too old or RAM it is not enough.

I saw a lot of comments about the K6-2 , That was my office computer only 2 years ago (not kidding) , Runtimes were 96hours long . Seems like the app is now updated and needs the SSE instruction set.

With only 32mb ram, BOINC would not download seti tasks. I tried it on one of my 486's a while back. It gave some message about insufficient memory.

Does anyone know where I might find a copy of libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll? I've been searching with no luck for a few hours now.
