I tipped the pizza delivery person $4 yesterday on a $12 order, which I felt was ok, and my mother felt was ridiculous, lol. ;~) She's never been big on tipping and said she would have done a $1. I've heard about some restaurants going to non-tipping and paying the servers more per hour, but I wonder if that will catch on and spread? The way I understand it other countries aren't so into tipping, and I guess everybody's happy? Would you like to see tipping eliminated and menu prices go up, or do you prefer the current system? There are definitely strong thoughts from customers and employees. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

One restaurant chain I read is now paying its employees $14 an hour and tipping is ended there for all its servers, prices are reputably going up there at the restaurant chain by 12-15%, of course over the long haul prices may and probably will drop some, maybe. Joe's Crab Shack supposedly is doing something like that in certain markets. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

In parts of Europe tipping is unheard of, partly because they pay the staff well enough. It certainly makes life easier. I'm a big believer in servers earning their tip, although my wife sometimes calls me a cheap old bastard as a result. She's two-thirds right (my parents were married). |

United States: Tipping & Etiquette Generally, the average tip is 15% to 20% of the total meal cost. |

This topic is going to be very location specific, so be aware of that. http://www.dol.gov/whd/state/tipped.htm In some places in the USA your server gets $2.13/hr waiting on you. (17 states) In some places in the USA your server gets $9.47/hr waiting on you. (Washington) In many establishments they do not get to keep all the tip. Many places require this tip to be split with the bus help and the kitchen help. It isn't permitted to be split with managers although some places have done that. In some places all the tips for the day are combined and split so the bad staff profit from the good staff. If you leave a cash tip, it may not get "reported." If you leave the tip on your credit card it will be "reported." What is reported? That would be to the IRS for income tax and FICA purposes, but it also can mean to the employer for the tip pool and split. As you let this sink in, you can see that some employers can and do rip off the employees and where tips can be a very contentious issue. Ask the wait staff at your favorite places how their job handles the tips and what the staff is paid. Frankly I think this information should be disclosed on the menu! It might force a few places to stop the terrible practices they engage in. Think about those 17 states where $2.13/hour applies and if they have a tip pool where the dishwasher gets $2.13/hr and 1% of the tips. Do you have confidence he is doing a great job, or do you have a touch of diarrhea? Oh and think about those 17 states again, the MickeyDees employee is getting full minimum wage, the wait staff at the sit down is only getting $2.13/hr! I've got my own tip rule. I have a percent in mind. Average service gets that amount. Bad service (servers fault) it goes down. Excellent service and it goes up. I also have a second rule which is a minimum amount. That one usually only comes into play when I dine alone at a cheap place. As the bill isn't as much as two, but I know running back and forth to refill my drink and bring the plates is a much work for one or two, I take that into account. |

I'm old fashioned, and I admit it. I grew up with my parents tipping 15%; so, that's what I do. I HATE places that include "Mandatory" 18% tip on the bill; regardless of how service went! I'm the customer; and I should have say over what I tip!!! ...And, in actuality, because I always round up, I'm usually tipping over the 15%; but, NEVER 18-20%. When tipping, I NEVER include tax on a meal, I include the meal, and drinks, and appetizers; and dessert if there was any. TL TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

My senior year in high school, and the year I spent in college, I worked in a family-run Italian restaurant. I started out as a dishwasher, moved up to soup/pasta cook, then to busboy. Made minimum wage ($1.65/hr - 1972). Don't remember if I got a cut of the waitress' tips. My standard tip is 20% of the pre-tax total, usually rounded off to the nearest quarter-dollar. Bad service/bad server I will cut it in half, but never totally stiff the server, for the reasons Gary mentioned. And I make allowances for peak times, big parties, and if they run out of something. I remember what it was like on a very busy Saturday night. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

In the neighborhood pub I frequent the servers pool the tips, they all work as a team and the turnover is very low. The owner claims they make over 40K a year in wages and tips. As Gary noted the min wage in Washington is among the best in the nation and no it has not killed jobs. In fact one could argue it has helped create jobs because these people can afford to be consumers. I do tip between 15 and 20%. |

My standard tip is 20% unless I am in a local that pays a significant minimum wage, like Washington or Santa Fe NM. Remember that the federal government requires a wage of at least $2.13 per hour be paid to employees that receive at least $30 per month in tips. If wages and tips do not equal the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour during any pay period, the employer is required to increase cash wages to compensate. So the reality is that wait staff get $7.25 or more per hour. Also keep in mind that if you pay less than 15% in tips that the waitstaff is paying to serve you. 15% is assumed and withholding is based on that for taxes. |

I also pay 20% when I go out to eat. But that depends on the service We get. If it is truly bad then only 10%. Now the place where we order our pizza, The delivery folks must like us. We give them a $5.00 dollar tip on a $16.00 dollar order. But the pizza will burn your tounge when it gets here. So I have no regrets giving them a good tip. [/quote] Old James |

My standard tip is 20% unless I am in a local that pays a significant minimum wage, like Washington or Santa Fe NM. I believe that is 8% not 15%. https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc761.html Of course and audit can establish a different amount. Also that mandatory 18% big party tip, isn't a tip! |

I've heard of "tip pooling", and quite a few high dollar restaurants do that around here because supposedly it spreads the wealth, but the downside is the slackers get rewarded for nothing. I think overall service would suffer with tipping being eliminated, but apparently it works ok in other countries. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

What is very unclear and always has been, is do you tip a hall porter that takes your bags up to your hotel room? Do you tip a hotel doorman that calls you a cab? When I worked as a Night Auditor at 21c hotel, the bellhops and valets received generous tips. I even received pretty unexpected tips calling cabs for people. When my friend Mike is working a train, the crew pools all the tips and splits it evenly. Recently, part of the tip was a check made out to him, so the actual cash he pocketed was mot too much. He got his fair share, of course, just a bit of an inconvenience. I generally tip somewhere between 15 and 20%. It varies because I like to round the total charge on my credit card to the next whole dollar. That could even put it a little over 20% sometimes. Regarding pizza, the driver usually gets some or most of the delivery charge (over the cost of the food), but I'll give a buck or two on top of that. I did pizza delivery a few times. Don't remember what the average tip was, but they usually also liked to round off the bill. Once, I went to a house where I had to count out their change to the penny, and then they gave me $1 back. turned out this house was well known to the other drivers and they were surprised I got the $1. Another time, I got nothing because I took so long to deliver, and it wasn't my fault. The order taker wrote down the address wrong; the actual street was about 2-3 miles away, but the one written down was several miles in the other direction. When I got there and couldn't find that house number, I spent my own 25c to call the people from a pay phone (before I had a cell) and I didn't even get that back. (If you're interested, use a map site to look up the location of Rosati's Pizza on Indian Trail in Aurora, IL. The delivery was supposed to go to McClure Road; the street written down was McLaren. Don't call and harass them for me, though. It's changed hands at least a couple of times since then. It happened a long time ago and this is the kind of brain sludge that insists on staying put while things I need to remember disappear.) Here Pizza delivery is not tipped, why? The delivery person, is actually the customer, so there is no delivery and yep No tip, the reason there is no delivery, We're told 12 miles is too far to drive(lame), so pick it up yourself, so if I want a pizza and have room in My budget, I just save the money, and go buy a pizza from the super market instead. Thankfully we pay people over here a reasonable wage so this custom is rarely seen anywhere in this country. Cheers. |
