I came home from a bike ride. When I raised the garage door my wife's car was gone. Nothing unusual. When I went into the house the tv was on and the volume was up. Quite unusual since I am not an habitual tv watcher. I saw an airplane fly into a building. Maybe the 3rd o 4th replay of that famous video. A science fiction movie I thought. Why would Dorothy leave that on for me. But after watching for another minute or so I realized that it was real.

My first thought after that realization was "well, some chickens finally cane home to roost".

What was yours?

I was at work. Somebody heard about it on a radio and then we turned on a TV in time to witness the second crash. Nobody got much work done that morning. I also remember getting a sick feeling when the first tower came down.

Woke to the clock radio on the news station. First plane had hit. Stumbled out of bed grabbing for glasses and the TV remote to see the terrible accident. As that is sinking in and the cobwebs are going away the second plane hit the other building. Took a minute to realize it wasn't a replay. Then I realized we were at war. Called my good friend who would have been asleep and told him. He was on a counter-terrorism task force at LAX and I knew he was needed at work PDQ. After a couple minutes on the phone and him seeing some TV he knew too and did the quick get ready and go to work early. We talked several times that day, and he did a double shift or until all air traffic was on the ground. I went to work, but there wasn't much to do that day or for a few days after. May have been the next day I called my broker to offer condolences as their head office was in the second tower. Several people he knew had perished. Very sad.

I was at work. At my job selling industrial electronic parts.
I had two computers running and two monitors stacked.
One had our business and invoicing system on it, and the other one was internet connected and I used it for contacting suppliers for quotes and searching for parts for my customers. When not looking for parts, I generally had CNN on for current news.
I saw the whole thing unfold. When the first plane hit, it was at first thought that it was a tragic avionic disaster. Then the second plane hit, and it became apparent that it was not.

I shall never forget that day...

I was in my Manhattan apartment, taking the week off work while I hosted a visitor from the UK, which was my good fortune as the office I worked in at the time was on the 4th floor of 222 Broadway, or about a block north of where this was filmed. My guest had stepped out to get some things for breakfast when I heard a report about the first plane on the radio (I say radio, I was streaming BBC Radio 5 to help my guest feel more at home). I switched on the TV and my guest returned to see the second strike live. Like Gary, I knew it was war.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...
