Rather disappointed in the new movie. I don't think JJ Abrams knows what he's doing with this franchise.

Did Lucas, either, really?

Being that I like 1-6, with the worst in the series being 1, I think Lucas knew what he was doing and did it quite well.

That said, Abrams' attempt could have been worse ... a lot worse. So, I may see VIII.

IMHO, it was worse.... a lot worse. I'd dive into details but out of respect for those that dislike any spoilers, I won't go into it.

I think you're not alone in that, but you're definitely in the minority.

He honored the original trilogy, but also progressed the story nicely. My biggest gripe about V was always that it didn't come to a conclusion, it just ended, yet everybody says it was the best. In this case, I expected it to leave things open for more movies, which it did, but it did close out the action in it.

Tell ya what, I'll start a new thread for discussion with spoilers.

We got sucked into the hype. Eric and I decided that we just couldn't wait until after the holidays, so we went and saw Star Wars this evening.

Meh.

I won't give anything major away but... meh.

I think that I'm just too old for modern movies. I miss dialogue. It's almost like Hollywood has returned to silent movies. Wait. I take that back. There was actually nothing silent about this movie. My ears were constantly bombarded by the sounds of weapons firing and stuff exploding.

Call me an old fuddy-duddy, but I prefer plot, intrigue and dialogue in the movies I see.

I have no desire to see this movie again.

Angela, usually I feel the same. I don't like many newer movies because of too much action and effects and too little story. But I wouldn't count EVII to those movies. Compared to JJ's Star Trek movies I found his Star Wars rather "conservative". I hope you understand what I'm trying to say;-)

Anyway, I really enjoyed the movie and overall I like it. Just not sure yet, how much I like it. And I think I will watch it again soon because I just saw it with german syncro yet and the syncro rather sucks.

I'll wait for it to come out on blue ray , won't be that long b4 they release it and you can pre order it from Tesco's already so it will available elsewhere .
Least at home can have a smoke and don't have annoyances like people talking or texting all the time + from what I've heard it's overhyped like 95% of the films nowadays :-)

P.s JJ Abrahams messed up star trek so will probably done the same here .

I don't think your age has anything to do with it. The character development and plot were severely lacking.

The honest truth is that too many people make too much money from the franchise not to continue it.

Do you really think Disney payed billions of dollars just for fun when they bought Lucas Films ?

In terms of story lines, timeline, etc., his first Trek gave him permission to mess with it however he likes. It's a different timeline than the original, so things can and will happen differently.

However, what I don't like is that he messed with Roddenberry's vision of a good and happy future Earth. His edict was always that conflict had to come from outside, not within the Federation and certainly not within the human race. I understand that this was a huge obstacle for the writers, but I like the future it projected. Abrams introduced too much human angst and conflict for my taste. It's probably more realistic, though.

As for the characters, I think new Spock is too Vulcan, more than old Spock ever was, even in TOS. TOS Kirk was clever and brave and brash and disregarded regulations when he felt like it, but he did have experience and the resulting wisdom that new Kirk lacks. I like the new Scott; he's just slightly different from the original, a tad more irreverent and cynical. New Sulu is a bit milder, at least so far. New Chekov has the balls that Sulu lacks. New Uhura is like she always should have been (and how I think Nichelle would have liked to play her), but they couldn't have her be in the 1960s. New McCoy is the most like the original. He even sounds like him.

Article about Wars/Trek connections. Nothing Earth-shattering (or Death Star-shattering).

Saw this originally as a re-tweet from University Berkeley...
From New Scientist DAILY NEWS 16 December 2015
Star Wars universe passes real-world test for alien head count

We asked astronomers to apply the Drake equation – a method for estimating our chances of finding alien life – to work out how many planets would need to have intelligent life for the Star Wars depiction to ring true. Their conclusion is that the diversity of life depicted in the Star Wars galaxy is optimistic – but not unrealistic.
