Well the great race has been run the Nation stopped and saw .....

The First Female jockey in the history of the race to WIN on Prince Of Penzance @ $65.90 to $1

However a horse called Red Cadeaux broke down just before the finish and had to be taken to the vet

Racing Victoria confirmed the 10-year-old gelding's injury, saying he had been taken to Werribee Vet Clinic for further assessment, after failing to finish.

He had been stabilised on track and his leg was put into a splint.

The 10 year old horse will make a full recovery and retire

The risk of horse fatalities in a steeplechase is around six per 1,000 starts, says Dr Mark Kennedy, senior lecturer in animal welfare at Anglia Ruskin University. This is compared to approximately one per 1,000 horse starts for flat racing and four per 1,000 horse starts for hurdling.

Flat horse racing I don't think is cruel as a person that owned a horse I know they love to run if given the chance , but a steeplechase or hurdles are cruel and unfear on the horses
So I would like to see that type of race stopped as it is not a natural thing for horses to jump while flat out galloping , In nature they would avoid a obstacle not try and jump over it
