From the main page:

"January 7, 2005
Outage Notice. Because of nearby building construction there will be an extended power outage this coming weekend. All of our machines will be turned off so there will be no data or web service. The outage will begin Sunday, January 9, at 18:00 PST (January 10, 02:00 UT). We hope to be back up Monday at 08:00 PST (16:00 UT)."

Everyone configured for low WU queues should consider increasing them over the weekend to avoid being caught idle!

Or, they could join/attach to an additional BOINC project...

Don't blame me, I voted for Johnson(L) in 2016.

I just started back then. And it made me install SetiQueue as I ran out of WU's in 1 day. I waited almost a week for a new WU.

And thanks to the BOINC people for warning us so early. Good job guys!

As to the outage, I remember that week quite well. Some of my machines actually ran out of work which is what convinced me to dump my home grown workqueue system. Got to be a pain moving WU's from slower machines so the faster ones had something to keep busy. Installed SetiQueue as soon as the problem was fixed really helped, it managed the queue very well.

Too bad it doesn't work with BOINC.

Only too well. I did not have a queue at the time, and I had no work for most of a week. ( I was lucky, most of my machines had retrieved work just before the pipe was stolen).

I will not be increasing my queue, I have enough projects that are currently supplying WUs to keep me busy for the duration.

Ah, the memories:

March 5, 2001

Around 11:00 GMT (3:00am PST) on Tuesday, February 27, 2001, network fibers were broken, cutting off the entire Space Sciences Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley Labs from the internet. It turns out this was the work of vandals who cut the fiber in the process of gathering a bunch of expensive copper wire. Due to the difficulty in finding the break, and then repairing in the rain and mud (on a steep slope no less), the outage lasted over five days.

The SETI@home website and data server were unaccessible for several days during the entire length of the outage. During this time we took the opportunity to take care of a few offline items, such as split our server equipment into two separate "data closets" - when put in one single closet, the equipment was heating up beyond spec.

We came back on line on Saturday, March 3rd, and rather quickly recovered from the back log of clients trying to send results and get new workunits. We are operating normally now, though we are currently dropping a few connections a second, and are trying to determine why (possibly a disk mounting issue).

Hi

I remember too, so i think its time to increase the number of work for people that only atached to Seti/Boinc.

BTW Thanks for the info.

On the off chance they will have problems getting the systems back up I did do just that ... my experience with shutting working systems down and turning them back on says that it won't be smooth ... one of the reasons that I never turn off my systems until I have to ...

Please forgive me for my inexperience on this -

My (pile of junk!) currently takes 10 hours to process a work unit. I had my general and home preferences set to contact every 0.1 days - this meant a new work unit arrived a couple of hours before the old one had been completed.
I've just re-set general and home preferences to 2 days - will this carry me over the shut-down without running out of work?

P.S. Within the next couple of weeks,(this pile of junk)machine will be history!
Pile of junk = 2.4Ghz Celeron + 128MB RAM.
New machine = 3.0GHz Pentium + 512MB RAM

Hi John

I´ve set my cache to 5 days worth.
This gave me 30 WUs, my machine crunches 8 a day so its enough for 4 days.
I hope it works.
I would set at more than two days, just my 2c.

greetz from Germany.

Thanks Mike!
Setting to 3 days - I don't want to get too far in front of myself keeping in mind I'll be 'migrating' to a new machine soon!

My pc does about 16 a day so I just set mine from 3 days to 5.So far it says it is not sending any more work out. Will have to wait and see if I can get a few more wu's.If not I will run out Monday morning.Fingers crossed.I know the daily limit 1s 50 so I may only get 50.Edit....Just read that the limit is now 100.Great news. That would last about 6 days.Should we disable Boinc network access during this outage thing too?
