2 to 3 million natives of what is now, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, eastern Cuba, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and the Bahamas declined to near nothing 50 years after Columbus landed. While 1/3rd just didn't have the anti-bodies to European diseases (especially Small Pox), the rest of the deaths are laid at the feet of the actions of Columbus, his brother Colon and the rest of the Spanish. It's a massive genocide and I can't see why anyone that would decry the WWII Holocaust could ever support Columbus Day again now that the facts of the genocide are pretty clear and not buried under political mythology. |

I must agree. Some progress has been made by former British Colonies to unskew remembrance days from their original viewpoint of white triumph, but there is a lot to be done in getting those outside these nations, who lost so much, to recognise that.
