Replica DB is back on line and only 3,540 seconds behind. That has to be some sort of record. Boincstats.com shows enough credit issued since the last daily update to create a number 2 in my "Best Ten Days". Yes it is back in record time, very impressive. As of now it claims to be caught up. A problem with this is that your stats data base gets skewed so it is not as good of descriptor of daily performane. |

Does any of the latest forum tinkering explain why the bit.ly shortcuts in my signature suddenly don't work? I changed one of them to its actual URL, but I don't have any characters left to change the others. The bit.ly URLs do still work on their own. Looking at it, it seems "http://" is missing. |

I changed one of them to its actual URL, but I don't have any characters left to change the others. The bit.ly URLs do still work on their own. You're right. I took the http:// out of the one I changed and it stopped working. Then I added http to one of the bit.lys and now it works. The thing is, they have worked for years without http:// Something has suddenly made them not work. [edit] I changed the first one back to bit.ly and added http:// to all three of them, and they all work again. Sniff, something on my system just threw away close to two years of Seti statistics. I have an old backup of the statistics* file, but that dates back to 22 October 2014. A year's worth of data lost. :-( I'm not sure what would cause it to completely nuke all the entries. Maybe the system clock/date jumped unexpectedly? Might not handle going backwards very well, such as being done with the 15th (UTC) but your clock was say..10 minutes ahead, but then the clock got fixed after BOINC had moved onto thinking it was now the 16th UTC, so it had already made a new entry point for the 16th, clock moved back to 15th, server contact happened, and then stats got nuked because it doesn't know how to go backwards. *shrug* As far as extending the number of days you can save... Thanks to some help from Josef..or Richard.. I don't remember which, the absolute maximum number of days the stats can be kept for was determined to be: 2^31 -1 / 86400 = 24855 days. I discovered that problem one because I set mine a tad too high and the whole stats file got nuked. Now I've got both machines set for 24850 and should never have to bother with it again. :) Linux laptop: record uptime: 1511d 20h 19m (ended due to the power brick giving-up) |

No, I figured out what caused it already: an installation of Avast Free AV. I'd tested that for a day but became really annoyed with it pretty damn quick. I uninstalled it and on the reboot found that it had caused quite a bit of corruption on my NTFS file system. I see 21 errors for NTFS in my Windows Event Viewer stating "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume Primary." Well, that must've been it then. Do not use Avast Free. |

Well, that must've been it then. Do not use Avast Free. It might come down to don't use free anti-virus ... Not BOINC issue, but AVG free updated and closed ports that had been opened for a specific application at work. PITA. When you are behind a NAT leave the f'in ports alone! |

It might come down to don't use free anti-virus ... Or drop the 'free' as well. For the past days since that debacle I've been running sans anti virus. I didn't have that much of any infestations the past years anyway. I'll scan the system once in a blue moon with the online AV scanners (Bitdefender, Trendmicro, ESET, Kapersky all offer one)and the rest of the time I'll keep the system in check with MBAM and SuperAntiSpyware. Not doing that much illegal activities anymore anyway, and the sites you can get infected adverts from watch better on the phone. ;-) |

I've liked Avira's free version for a few years now..and I never let it do the firewall or browser protection. And I went and added BOINC's entire folders to the exceptions for real-time scanning and full scanning functions. Never had any issues with it. I haven't needed A/V in quite a while, and I go to sketchy sites in VM using XP. About the only time A/V has been useful for me is when someone handed me a flash drive that had been infected with something that was supposed to run from autorun.. but I've got the group policy on this system to 100% disable autorun entirely. But Avira found it and didn't like it one bit. Linux laptop: record uptime: 1511d 20h 19m (ended due to the power brick giving-up) |

As of this post there has been over 101,000 results returned. We are processing lots of work thanks to a spate of shorties. In no way I see this as being a problem |

Except for the dearth of APs......the National News last night made mention that SETI had turned it's telescopes towards the newly discovered possible Dyson Sphere to try for a better view. How little they understand what we actually do here........ "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

How little they understand what we actually do here........ Need to recall that SETI@home definitely not the single SETI on the Earth. AFAIK SETI Institute would use Allen telescope array to look there... |

Need to recall that SETI@home definitely not the single SETI on the Earth. The Green Bank and Arecibo facilities were specifically mentioned... "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

Pointless using the Arecibo telescope as it can't see that part of the sky. GBT will have to be scheduled, and that will probably take a few months, as will the other big Northern Hemisphere telescopes. The exception is the ATA, which is heavily funded by the SETI Institute who have a lot of observation slots booked and so can call the tunes on where the ATA is pointing. As for lack of AstroPulses, these are only ever available when a new set of tapes are loaded - they are split from the same data as the MB, and generally are split before the MBs... (Of course when a tape is "slit", it is a copy of the data that is split, not the prime data which remains intact for future analysis.) I read on Space.com yesterday or the day before that it was the Allen Array they were going to point at it. Brett Here is the link. Edit: http://www.space.com/30855-alien-life-search-kepler-megastructure.html |

Here's an interesting phenomena. If you look at the Apps page you see the amount of production for each App. Let's look at these two, Linux/x86_64 7.08 (opencl_nvidia_sah) 18 Sep 2015, 18:34:25 UTC 3,143 GigaFLOPS Mac OS X/64-bit Intel 7.08 (opencl_nvidia_mac) 16 Oct 2015, 18:45:36 UTC 4,943 GigaFLOPS OK, now let's look at the GPU page here, http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/gpu_list.php. If you look at the associated results you see the Mac results are listed as, No GPU tasks reported. But...How can that be? There are more GigaFLOPS for the Mac nVidia App than the Linux one. Surely some NV GPU is producing those results. Is this some sort of server error or is something else at play? |
