Computer 7722741 which has a Radeon R7 240 with 2GB of RAM. It's this exact card: http://www.frys.com/product/7918670?source=google&gclid=CNGMrc7XsMcCFQkJaQodeLgGvA

Any thoughts on what could be causing this or how I could fix it?

i've gotten errors like that in the past when i've tried running multiple WUs per GPU.

so if that's the case with you, i recommend switching to just one WU per GPU

I'm only running 1 WU at a time. Currently I have Windows set to run all the time, should I have it shut off the monitor after a period to reduce GPU usage, alternate tasking?

did you already install 15.7.1 drivers from the amd website? if you're already on the latest drivers, then i don't know of what else to try because then it would seem to be an OS/driver issue.

so going back to an older OS and driver might work, but that would take time

windows 10 will install its own drivers if you try to install something older, but i think you can look up a way to disable automatic driver installation so you can force older drivers

is there a way for you to check the GPU temp and GPU fan speeds? hopefully you're not running too hot

I just built the unit and installed the latest drivers from AMD for Win 10. I'm at work currently, but when I get home later I'll see if there is a way I can diagnose GPU Temp and Fan Speed. The unit as a whole is pretty well ventilated, with SETI on the CPU runs 56-57c which seems reasonable for the level of utilization we crank. I am also going to try putting the monitors to sleep in case the running of the displays is distracting from the GPUs ability to compute.

GPU temp is low... 47C. I set monitor to sleep after 5min. Seems like it might have somewhat lessened the errors, but still annoying to see these errors. What is the thinking on the R7 250 v the 240? I can get that one which has a higher clock speed and greater processing power for only $10.00 more if I return the 240. Any less errors with the 250?

the 250 looks very similar to the 240 so i would think the propensity for errors wouldn't change. the 240 is a bit more efficient than the 250 though. my theory is that the problem is at the driver level. so as soon as this challenge is over i plan on experimenting with catalyst 14.4 and windows 7 to see if i can get around my errors. i haven't tried the thing where i would force old drivers on windows 10, in the back of my mind i would be worried that a future update would undo my workarounds.

another option if you were to return the card would be to get something like an nvidia gtx 750 or gtx 750 Ti. but of course some windows 10 users are struggling with nvidia drivers as well.

What is the challenge you guys keep referring to?

I'd like to get a card with Crossfire or SLI capability so I can add additional cards in the future. Any ideas as to ones that meet that criteria and are not a fortune? It looked to me like NVIDIA's SLI capable cards were more expensive than AMD's Crossfire capable cards.

there's an annual wow event going on right now. there's a link to it at the top of this forum

i'm not a gamer but crossfire/sli isn't always a sure thing. it's obvious that it's double the cost and double the power but the gain in framerate might only be 70% or less. you could run into heat issues if you don't add more cooling to your case. not all games support crossfire/sli and some that do can suffer from micro-stuttering that doesn't affect single gpu setups.

so a gtx 960 supports sli and we know it costs much more than a r7 250, but one gtx 960 should outperform a pair of r7 250 in crossfire

Do we have any AMD models that are working well with Windows 10? Zombu2 I thought a few of your setups were working well... no?

my seven Hawaii GPUs are doing okay on Windows 10, but only one WU per GPU. i don't plan on tweaking the setup until after the challenge is over

Zombu2 was trying linux

This card looks interesting... SLI capable and not crazy expensive.

it doesn't say that on the msi website

plus if you look at the pictures of the card, there are no sli bridges on top of the card
